The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 as expected took the top spot at the box office with $101 million. While that is a strong opening for any blockbuster movie, it is $20 million lower than the previous film and in fact it marks the lowest opening in the whole franchise history. Being that this is the final installment in the saga, the numbers are pretty disappointing, even at the international market where it opened wide in 80 countries, including China, but only made $146 million. Maybe it was a mistake to split the last book in two parts as the first Mockingjay pretty much turned off many audience members that didn't cared to return for part 2. Anyway this last chapter of the Katniss Everdeen story will finish with a worldwide gross of over $500 million which is far from being a failure regardless of what anyone says.


In the very distant second spot Spectre added $14.6 million to its ark for a three weeks total of $153 million. The Peanuts Movie came in third with $12.8 million for a current domestic total of $98 million.

Two other new wide releases opened to lower than expected numbers:

Seth Rohan's new holiday themed adult comedy The Night Before had a disappointing $10.1 million opening, which even for Seth Rogen is a low number for the $25 million budget film (in contrast 'This Is The End' opened to $20 million and even his biggest flop 2009 'Observe and Report' opened with $11 million).

Bombing miserably in the fifth spot is The Secret In Their Eyes which took a mere $6.6 million. That is the lowest opening ever for a Julia Roberts film that opened in 2000 screens or more. This American remake of the 2009 same name film from Argentina that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign language film didn't translated well in the Hollywood version. It changed the main theme of the original film (Argentina's political corruption of the early 70's) and turned it into an average Hollywood revenge thriller with a female detective (Roberts) replacing the father of the original film. Watch the original which is great and forget the crappy remake.

I'll never watch this Hunger Games movie, but a $100Mill opening is nothing to fucking sneeze at.

Of course they still break it up, they are making a fucking killing. Not like they would have made twice and much money if they kept it as one film.

Yeah some critics have pointed out that too: this film didn't had enough advertising for such a big franchise finale (remember when the last Harry Potter came out? even Osama Bin Laden hiding in a cave knew that movie was opening for the promos were insane!).
