Uuuuuh, he was RELEVANT in the 90's & Could Actually DICTATE What Country he Fought In...These Days, NOBODY is Going to Pay to Watch Roy Jones Fight on American Soil, Dude...Literally, REED STOPPED Watching Roy's Fights ALTOGETHER, 5 Fucking YEARS Ago...

Roy's DESPERATE & DELUSIONAL Now...It's SAD as Hell, but Doesn't Impact his Legacy Either Way...Unless, You Think Fans w/LESS than 5-10 Years of Fight Watching "Experience" Actually MATTER....

Those that SAW Roy @ his Best KNOW this ISN'T Even Remotely The Same Cat...

Too bad he didn't get rid of their corrupt asses entirely. It would have done more for his legacy than if he went up to heavyweight and beat Tyson and Lewis back to back.

no, it's completely irrevelant, since I never claimed that these guys were better than him. And I'm not biaised against RJ. In fact, I was a huge fan of him. I was a teen/young adult in RJ prime and he was pretty much my boxing idol. Took me about a month to look at his ko defeat to Tarver. Still, only the most delusional fans can claim that they are completely happy with the overall quality of RJ opponents. The guy wasted a lot of the best years of his career fighting nondescript opposition. He beats some good/great fighters, and he's undeniably a great fighter, but with his talent, he could have been so much more. He's a bit like PBF in that regard.

could he really dictate anything in 90's though? if so, why didn't he?
he didn't successfully ever dictate anything

it all just proves that Roy overvalued himself in the 90's, but is now more realistic

In March 1998, Rocchigiani captured the vacant WBC light-heavyweight title by defeating Michael Nunn by split decision at Max Schmeling Halle, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, but was demoted to "interim champion" three months later after the WBC inexplicably claimed its references in promotions and contracts to the Rocchigiani-Nunn fight as a championship bout, and to Rocchigiani as the champion in its rankings, had been "typographical errors".[SUP][2][/SUP] A match with WBC title holder Roy Jones was scheduled for November 1999 after Rocchigianni filed a lawsuit against Jones' promotional companies M&M Sports and Square Ring Promotions Inc due to Jones' reluctance to box Rocchigianni.[SUP][3][/SUP] However, the match was canceled by Jones' promoter Murad Muhammad after Rocchigiani missed a press conference. After initially threatening to strip Jones of his title if he didn't arrange another match with Rocchigiani,[SUP][4][/SUP] the WBC stripped Rocchigiani outright and removed him from their rankings due to inactivity, which prompted Rocchigiani to file a lawsuit against the WBC.

I agree, but let's not pretend it doesn't hurt his legacy. Of course it does.

For example...if Ali had stopped fighting after the Thriller in manila, as he should have done, there would be no question as to his status as #1 all time heavyweight and possibly #1 all time P4P. But he chose to fight on and looked bad against Shavers, Young, Norton, Spinks and then of course Holmes and Berbick...and now you have clowns on here that suggest that he may have lost to Tyson Fury.

    Ohhhh, please!

There's NOBODY on Earth who thinks that Ali's post Manilla career tarnishes his legacy. Damn sure not the Holmes or Berbick fights.

Once a former great is shot, no loss can really tarnish them.

It's like saying Duran's legacy is tarnished by getting beaten down by Joppy. Or like saying Tyson's legacy is tarnished by getting beaten down by Danny Williams. They were both shot to pieces so it's irrelevant.

Roy losing to Macaroni doesn't hurt his legacy. But fuck his legacy, it's bad for his HEALTH! Last time I checked, health should be more important than legacy.

Agreed, I don't see how a shot fighter losing to some guy's he would have toy with in his prime affects his legacy

    Please...

If Marciano hadn't retired after Moore and went on and got KO'd by Patterson, Liston and Johansson, right now his career would be viewed very differently.

Marciano was 32 years old when he retired. Probably near the point where he would have started to decline, but I can't see how it's relevant in this discussion. We never got to see a washed up Marciano. He retired whilst still near his prime. Roy is 46 fuckin years old, and has been shot for 12 years now! Him losing at this point means NATHAN in hurting his legacy... it means EVERYTHING in hurting his long-term health.

    So...answer me this, truthfully.

If Roy Jones retired now, would his legacy be the same as it would have been had he retired immediately after beating Ruiz?

    Truthfully.

No. But not based off losing to fuckin Macaroni.

The Tarver rematch hurts his legacy the most.

I'm not talking about "Macaroni" specifically. I'm talking about his succession of embarrassing KO defeats....post Ruiz.

Tarver rematch doesn't hurt too much, IMO. Glen Johnson and Tarver Rubber matches are what hurt; both made it seem like he had no heart once his talents had diminished. Then all of the subsequent KO losses suggested that his chin may have always been questionable.

I agree with you, in principle, in that in isolation this fight when he's 46 means nothing. But I'm looking at the entire body of work post Ruiz, including this fight.

By the way, in the same vein i believe Tyson's legacy had been damaged, but will say that it was the two Holyfield fights that really did it...and the Lewis fight didn't help AT ALL, even though we all know that wasn't the same Mike. It would have been better for Tyson if he had never come back from prison.

Yeah, the way he didn't went for the kill in the 12th round, even though he was far behind and Tarver was spent, can be hold against him and argued as a flaw in his prime.

I must be daft for continuously responding to your trolling, but here goes. RJJ was an absolute phenom. There is no bigger RJJ fan on this site than I am, except maybe Mister REED. But Benn and Eubanks were miles better than anything RJJ fought, except a very young Hopkins. For what it's worth, IMO RJJ would have lit Benn up. Badly. But even RJJ has admitted that Eubanks would have been an awful fight for him. It would have been an awful fight for everyone to watch, too. Froch is a fantastic example of what fighters should be, but that shouldn't detract from how limited he was. Froch was a fucking farmer. Calzaghe would have flamed Froch, let alone Collins/Watson/Benn etc.

He was ruined by jumping up then back down 2 weight classes at an advanced age. After Ruiz, he shouldve gone for a big HW fight, then retired regardless of outcome. A loss to a Lewis/Tyson/Klitschko wouldnt really hurt given his size disadvantages, and a win would have solidified his all-time status. Not top 20, more like top 5. What happened instead is a tragedy.

Yes. Froch is the Marciano of his era, tough, crude, limited but utterly professional.

Eubanks was never as professional as Froch, regarding his camps, training, making the weight etc, but he was more talented.

Collins is probably somewhere in between, not as innately talented as Eubank, but more talented than Froch and just as hard and dedicated.

Calzaghe for all the hate he gets would not have shipped a fraction of the shots that most guys did vs Froch and might well have stopped the Farmer on an accumulation and accuracy. Dirrell hurt Froch and so therefore could Calzaghe.

Trolling? I assume you're referring to yourself.

You'd be hard pressed to find a negative word said by me about Froch. He wasn't pretty, he wasn't flashy but he was tough as hell and would fight anyone.

We'll agree to disagree about Benn and Eubanks. A fight with Eubanks would have sucked because of Eubanks. Benn would have gotten his ass whupped because he would have been dumb enough to fight. I also don't agree that Benn or Eubanks were better than the guys Jones fought. It's not as though they fought a murderers row either which leads back to my point about the best thing they could have done is fight stick with their Euro tourney amongst themselves.

To circle this back to Froch...neither Benn nor Eubanks made the effort to do anything close to what Froch did. I'll throw Calzaghe in that mix as well. He tried to be better late. Whether I believe Calzaghe beats Froch or not I view Froch far more favorably than him.

The FUCK did you just say?

Rock is tossing in his grave off of that statement.

With all due respect, it's an incorrect statement as well. Marciano had A LOT more offensive skill than Froch, and was a lot harder to hit cleanly than Froch.

Froch got by moreso on determination than Marciano. Yeah, Marciano's determination helped, but it also helped that he was one of the best P4P punchers in history. And that type of power IS a talent.

Froch had good, but not devastating power.

As for Calz-Froch, it's pretty easy to call... Joe by commanding decision. He wouldn't stop Froch though. Carl is too tough. But Joe's handspeed and activity would definitely be too much for Froch to win. That, and the fact that Calz was physically a strong guy and I think Froch would underestimate his strength. Joe would bully Froch just like Ward did.
