. Major character death. Good new character development. Action was a little lacking to me but overall a worthy addition to the franchise. Easily in the top 3 movies of the series.

If there's one thing I hate it's Hollywood 'reboots', but it would be pretty awesome if they could redo the prequels and get them right this time.

I didn't have much hope for this film, even though I knew George Lucas wasn't involved. I have to say, it is excellent. It's a Star Wars fans film. This is the film we've been waiting for since Empire Strikes Back.

 

I liked 'The Force Awakens', but I don't 'love it' like I do love the first two films. J.J. Abrams proved competent, but his storytelling was WAY too derivative of those first two original films. He played it safe (pussy!) recreating the basic plot of 'A New Hope' so we were treated with another evil empire (now called The First Order) seeking the secret plans (map) hidden in an astromech droid (BB8) who crosses path in a desert planet with a young orphan (Luke in the original, Rey here) and eventually befriends space smuggler Han Solo on a quest with destiny. The similarities are so obvious that borders on plagiarism.

Not to mention the new Death Star, trash compactor, new emperor, new Grand Moff Tarkin, New Darth Vader....x wings vs tie fighters in the final battle. It was virtually a remake...but guess what...that was NECESSARY after those George Lucas prequel abominations. A resetting of the tale was appropriate.

 

It wasn't necessary, but it was what hardcore fanboys were demanding: more of the same. I for one give props to George Lucas for trying to bring something new in the prequels with all its intricate political machinations and creating new myth. As much as these nerds claim to hate the prequels you see them cosplaying as Darth Maul, Qui Gong Jin, padawan's braids, multicolored lightsabers and girls dressed as Padme...if you take a blood test on them you'll find prequel's midichlorians every where! ::

 

Dude teh prequels were SHIT! And I give Lucas no credit for anything...he ruined the mythology by completely changing the history and the feel of teh films.

 

They were not bad films. They were just disappointing as they were not what fans were expecting, particularly 'The Phantom Menace' got a lot of bad rap mainly because (main complaint) it was not as fun as the previous ones and (second main complaint) it was so different from the others. When it opened in 1999 it got mixed reviews, but in the last 16 years, as the internet has grown so has the numbers of pseudo-movie critics who trash it mercilessly thus bringing its scores down. It became 'chic' to hate the prequels even by the same morons who camped outside the movie theaters for weeks before the opening of each one. They forget that they themselves made those films blockbusters and gave Lucas millions of dollars in profits.

Nerd: "I hate the Phantom Menace! Everything in it sucked! George Lucas ruined my childhood! By the way, how much you want for that rare collector's edition Darth Maul figurine? Name the price and I'll match it!" :doh:

 

As a standalone it was entertaining.

But the prequels strayed too far from the mythology that made the original trilogy such a hit. I mean Lucas seemed to be making up things as he went along....he changed the story almost completely. And nothing and I mean NOTHING in the 3rd film can make up for the fact that the portrayal of Anakin/Darth Vader was nothing like what we knew of teh character in the originals. Darth Vader is the most iconic villain in cinematic history...what Lucas did to his character and story were criminal and unforgivable. Out of the many sins of the prequel trilogy that was by far the most egregious.

 

I mean...can you really see that whiny weak Hayden portrayed Anakin being the same guy that said "your lack of faith is disturbing" etc. Vader was a powerful man, and great leader, a strong character. he was the man. What the fuck was Lucas thinking.

Leia said she remembers her mother
Obi Wan was trained by yoda (not Qui Gon Jinn)
Obi Wan was an OLD man in the original star wars...in the prequels he was only 30 years or so older than Luke.
Obi wan didn't remember having a droid
"Darth" wasn't a title given to all Dark Side force wielders....that was actually Vader's first name (based on the fact that Obi Wan referred to him as Darth)
Uncle Owen was Vader's brother...and they had a close relationship it is suggested before he turned to teh dark side (didn't see any of that)
Only Jedi fought in the clone wars ("You fought in the clone wars?"..."yes, I was once a jedi knight same as your father"
The Jedi were weak...couldn't handle a bunch of robots
The Storm Troopers were not clones
Why was Leia..."Princess Leia" if her parents or even adopted parents weren't Monarchs? Saw no sign of her royal lineage...even adopted royal lineage. Remember her Mother was an ELECTED Queen (nonsense in and of itself) and was merely a senator at the time of Leia's birth
Why did Anakin have to be the son of the force?
If he was so much more powerful than Yoda (according to midicholrian count) how could he lose to Obi Wan in a fight?
If Anakin was initially deemed too old to be trained as a jedi...how come Obi wan was a padawan in his 20s? Was Obi Wan just a shit padawan that learned slowly? Or is this yet another glaring inconsistency.
What's with child jedis anyway?
