Looks like the two of you are out numbered. All the rest of us agree that it's a dull, forgettable movie.

One of the best movies ever made?:l2::l2:

Outnumbered on the board but in the majority globally. And you just hate on it because of its popularity.

Avatar is a good movie, but not great.
    Here is my 2009 review:

AVATAR Contrary to what others have said, I found that this was a very entertaining film. The first two hours is a fascinating journey of discovery, a tour through the exotic fauna & flora of the alien world of Pandora. A technological triumph that raises the bar for believable CGI characters. That said, I too have to admit that its plot was very predictable from the start and the characters weren't as developed as the CGI effects. Yes, it was Disney's POCAHONTAS in outer space. The similarities were obvious (I was expecting that the 'old tree' will show the face of an old lady and start talking too). And why turn a $300 million movie into a in-your-face "save-the-trees and the rainforests" 'message film'? It's much hyped 3D effects weren't impressive at all. So save your money and watch the regular 2 D version. I was equally impressed as I was disconnected from its lack of emotional resonance. As much as I wanted to love this film, I couldn't. It surely is a good film and I recommend it, but it wasn't the most entertaining science fiction event of the year. That honor still belongs to STAR TREK. 8/10

I agree pretty much with this except I liked the 3D and my rating would be a 6 or 7.

A visually impressive film based on a 5th grader's adventure story

    Typical brainless Cameron horseshit

Interesting concept in 09 but this movie didn't age well at all.

I think Avatar is Cameron's worst movie.

    Nope.

Piranha 2: The Spawning was unwatchable and killed the franchise.
The Abyss is a technical marvel but incredibly boring.

Ok. U got me on Piranha 2.

But I'd take The Abyss over Avatar 7 days of the week.

Avatar is just a lame, teeny bopper movie with A+ CGI and C- everything else.

It's basically nothing more than the non-animated version of Fern Gully.

The Abyss bored me the first time I watched it. It was too long, too talky, not much was going on and too much emphasis on the husband-wife conflict than on what we really came for. Cameron himself admits his own then marital problems were reflect on the film and that hurt the film which bombed at the box office and wasn't received well by critics in 1989. I watched it again just skipping the boring parts and going for the interesting sections when the extended edition came out. That film could be great if Cameron cuts out at least 40 minutes of those parts that drags and feels like a freaking French drama.

I can't remember one line of dialogue from this movie and other than the big tree falling, can't remember any scenes.

Avatar will not age well. 15 years from when the CGI looks dated, it'll be looked at as a garbage movie.

Avatar is so much more than good CGI. You really need to watch it again...or at least watch it properly this time. That film is great.

It's a matter of taste, honestly, as both have almost similar average rating: The Abyss 7.2, Avatar 7.4

You know what Sly I agree with you. Avatar was an excellent movie. While I wouldnt say its the best ever, it WAS the best movie I ever experienced in theatre.

In addition to the effects, and I know I'll take heat for this... I found the movie to be incredibly deep. It had so many complex themes layered over one another. It had the theme of exploring new worlds, of being paralyzed, of technology to overcome paralysis and the awakening it provides, of transforming the human body, mind and emotions, the intermixing of species/races, the symbiotic relationship between man and beast, the destruction of the ecosystem, the interconnectivity and one-ness of everything. It hit me so hard, i felt like i entered another world visually and mentally. Coming out of it i went into withdrawl for a little bit. ive never watched it again because i dont want to ruin that experience- it wasnt like just watching a movie, felt like going on a mind altering drug trip, and i came out the other side having learned new things and understanding our world and surroundings better.

I dont believe everybody is capable of seeing what the movie is really about, but when I do talk to people that saw it on this level, i find it further enlightening. We are a rare breed Sly, and I respect your thoughts on this.

Thank you for posting that as that was like the main reason why this film, with a very simple not-quite-original storyline, became such a phenomenon: it was all about the experience. In fact many people had the 'withdrawal stage' so bad that they became depressed that Pandora doesn't exist nor all those fantastic wonders. For many people who watched it many times it was the ultimate escape from reality, but then going back to the 'normal world' became very difficult and had to seek help from psychologists (they had a field day).

As D Man said, Avatar is deep. It's not just some special effects extravaganza. Many people here let the special effects cloud their vision and they missed the depth of the story and the message.

Same thing happened to Star Wars in 1977: many people kept saying, 'Oh, is all about the spaceships & special effects', but when a bunch of imitators came out and bombed then many realized there was more to the George Lucas movie than spaceships & robots.

How did Lex Luthor put it:

"Some people can read War and Peace and come away thinking it's a simple adventure story. Others can read the ingredients on a chewing gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.
    "

I've known some people that watched the Matrix and thought it was a futuristic Kung Fu movie with cool Special effects.

Uh, thought The Matrix was a futuristic Kung Fu movie with cool special effects...and a rip-off of the Anime film "Ghost in The Shell".

    Nope.
I still look at Star Wars as I did then and think: "this is all about spaceships, robots and special effects"

    Always have, always will.

Funny thing is that originally the first one was supposed to open this past Christmas, but was delayed not to compete with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and to allow James Cameron to work withot the pressure of such a rushed deadline. Now it looks like Cameron is constantly changing the script, scrapping things and the budget ballooning out of control (sounds familiar? yup, same thing happened with Titanic that by the time it was going to open every Hollywood analyst was predicting the biggest bomb in history).
