I've always thought of Sphere as THE most underrated sci-fi movie. It's an awesome movie and is rarely ever mentioned. One of the best sci-fi movies of all time IMO. 9/10.

Are you drunk or you lost your mind? If that is the same film from 1998 with Dustin Hoffman & Sharon Stone that is one of biggest pieces of shit ever put on film. Heck, check rottentomatoes score: 12% rotten

I'd watch Sphere again before I'd ever watch Avatar again.

Sphere was ok but Event Horizon was much better. I think they were released in the same year

Absolutely....but only in a Sly One Avatar. In my current state I don't think I can satisfy a 12 foot blue alien. ;)

I liked both, truth by told. I love me some SciFi. I like "Sunshine" too.

All three are entertaining films, but Avatar was much better.

People here are too hung up on the hype, popularity and CGI-ness of Avatar to give it a fair assessment....or perhaps y'all just don't like fantasy. I'm assuming that the people that don't rate avatar as the same people that don't rate Lord of the Rings.

The Story, character development, screenplay, drama and pacing of Avatar is excellent. The concepts of Sapient beings connecting with animals, and Eywa the deity joining all things etc was excellently handled. Cameron created a "dangerous paradise". The film tugged at the heart strings with teh destruction of hometree. Quaritch was a great character as was Neytiri, Tsutey and Moat. The whole Toruk Makto business was classic stuff.

All of you that don't rate Avatar simply didn't "get it".

    Totally agree with Pancy here.
The major weak link is and has been for the last 25 years is fucking Dustin Hoffman: the guy picks so many shit movies and roles to play like Ted Bundy picked up women....awful.

i get it man... by the way I like all of those movies but I wouldn't compare them. Event horizon was more like alien , an adult movie where as avatar was the family blockbuster .

Avatar is an all around better movie. I was just more entertained by sphere because of the mystery angle. Avatar is pretty predictable.

Come on, son! If you say that you like 'Sphere' as guilty-pleasure, I understand, but is still crap.

Same here, although I disagree with you that Avatar is the better overall film. It isn't and there is a reason why we watched Sphere more. Avatar just has more money dumped on it and is all style and no substance. It is only a better film in visuals and it's simplistic nature which suits the short attention spanned Transformer generation.

By the same token Sphere also isn't as good as X says it is either IMO. It starts out great but the story starts to fall apart around the midway point even though the dialogue and superb acting performances keep it watchable. It's a good but not great film.
