It was implied...but you never saw it on screen. Which is my point.

I stopped reading your spoiler the moment I realized where it was going. So I didn't know anything going into this film.

whatever their merits relative to each other, those prequels were all far inferior to the original trilogy. you can't make write lines like this and expect people to care about what's happening.

I still don't know what the hell happened with those prequels, how did star wars go from three history-making movies to three resoundingly poor movies. did the studio know even back in the 70s that lucas shouldn't be given control over screenplay and direction? and it was only his ownership of the brand and the decades of hype that caused people (including Lucas himself) to trust him writing and directing the prequels.

Every film has the odd critics, even classics like Godfather and Ben Hur. That's not the point. The originals, specifically the first two, were widely praised. The prequel trilogy was widely bashed. And...for good reason.....they were disastrous films.

Forget the critics - the original movies were good, the prequels were largely rubbish. The writing, the fx, and the overall direction were just poor - not poor for a Star Wars movie, just poor generally.

Those hardcore Star Wars nerds who now claim that 'George Lucas raped my childhood' because of the prequels were the same ones that watched 'The Phantom Menace' 10 times on its first week of release.

    Nope.

No hardcore star wars fan watched Phantom menace more than once in the theater.

Although, in hindsight I think PM was the best of the prequels, even with Jar Jar binks. Qui Gon Ginn was a great character (albeit inconsistent with the backstory of the originals), Darth maul was a great also. The Pod race was highly entertaining and the duel of the fates lightsaber duel was just superb. The problem with that film is that it served no purpose in the Stay Wars mythology except showing how Palpatine became Supreme Chancellor (and how Lucas did that was silly)...and having Anakin as a ten year old child was pointless. The first time we saw Anakin he should have been a teenager just like the first time we saw Luke. That film did not advance the narrative for the prequels and left too much work to be done by the other two films.

I agree with you on almost everything except that 'The Phantom Menace' was the better prequel and that pointless pod race should have been done in five minutes, but took 20 minutes, wayyyy tooo looong!

Regarding Lucas prequels and the Force awakens this writer nailed it:

David Barr Kirtley on George Lucas:
“This movie actually made me appreciate George Lucas more. Because with the prequels, it’s hard to imagine how the execution could be worse, but it’s an ambitious project. He’s like, ‘I’m going to show you how a cute little kid with all this promise turns into a villain, and I’m going to show you how a democracy falls and becomes a dictatorship.’ And I think that’s a story worth telling. I wish he had told it better, but it’s ambitious, it’s trying to say something. I thought Lucas just had these weird, idiosyncratic things that make him so that he can’t create likeable characters anymore, and once he was out of the picture things would improve a lot. But with this movie it’s gone too far in the other direction. Now it’s all about the likeable characters, but it’s not saying anything and it’s not ambitious in any way at all.”

Jar Jar's very existence proves that George Lucas is an idiot.

This film had to go far in the other direction simply because of what Lucas did. To neutralize Acid you use Alkali, know'what'am'sayin'?

Now that Star Wars has been "reset", I'm sure Disney will be more "ambitious" while not losing its soul the way that cunt Lucas did...

I kind of feel sad for George Lucas. Here is a genius filmmaker who was very anti-establishment and anti-corporate when he was a young newcomer whose first effort received a lot of praise for its uniqueness within a shoestring budget, but was tagged as a 'cold fish' meaning he couldn't get audiences emotionally connected to his work. Then he makes a nostalgia film based on his own teenager years, and becomes a hit with audiences emotionally connecting with his work. Then he decides to do Flash Gordon film, but couldn't secure the rights, so he writes his own space opera, like a sort of love postcard to those old Flash Gordon Saturday matinee serials. And after struggling to find a studio to finance his space film, even after the huge success of 'American Graffitti', he finally gets the greenlight from 20 Century Fox president and delivers the film he was expecting to make 'Logan's Run' business ($65 million total), and then he will move on to more personal projects. 'Star Wars' became so big, he couldn't go back to his original career path. He created a MONSTER and he was Victor Frankenstein trying to figure out how to control this beast. It killed his career as a director. It killed any personal projects he wanted to pursue. It killed his marriage. And ultimately made him into the very same thing he was so opposed when came out of film school: a big corporate suit.

Still Lucas creativity continued blessing not only the film industry, but society in general. It was him who pushed the limits of the existing technologies to create new things like digital cameras, high definition sound, CGI, etc. It was through his ILM company that new techniques & devices were created. ILM gave birth to a CG department called PIXAR which eventually branched out of Lucasfilm until Disney bought it. THX Sound became the standard of the industry after Empire Strikes Back debuted with the new sound system. While making the sequels he pioneered for digital projection and the last two prequels were filmed completely in digital, something unheard of at the time. He received a LOT of backlash from the industry, particularly cinematographers, for predicting the demise of celluloid film format and opening the doors to digital cinema. Now many of those that badmouthed Lucas are shooting their films with digital cameras.

Regarding the prequels, Lucas himself didn't wanted to direct them himself, but none of the directors he wanted and trusted were available or just plain declined. He did them knowing he was rusty, but each successive film was an improvement over the prior one. After selling Lucasfilm to Disney, now Lucas is back at the same spot he was before he released Star Wars in 1977: wishing to do small, experimental films with no commercial value and that only a handful of people will watch. Now after an almost 40 years detour he might rekindle the fire he once had for the medium. And maybe one day those that now 'hate' him, will understand and appreciate the man who gave us so much.

    Thanks, George!

Overall I enjoyed the movie, however, some of the dialogue was cringe. The pilot's 'should I go first' or Finn acting like some idiot stoner, he was like something from a Seth Rogan movie.

Sly has no clue about movies and history of film makers. Hell, George Lucas actually shot parts of the godfather, and wrote the screenplays for Indiana jones. Listen to Copollas commentary in godfather and how he praised Lucas.
