    Of the ones in my list Redford won a Best Director Oscar and his film "Ordinary People" won Best Picture. Same with Costner & Beatty. were those films better than the others in the list?

    Robert Redford made a major film based on a best selling novel that someone else wrote into a screenplay.

    In comparison, Gary Oldman made his writing, directing, and co-producing debut on a limited budget indie film with a cast that wasn't recognizable outside of the UK and the man made a masterpiece.
