Roger Ebert gave it three and a half stars out of four and called it 'great entertainment'.

Time magazine put it in their cover and called 'darker, scarier, better!' and stated it was as good as The Empire Strikes Back.

    fourth week report:

In an unexpected tight race that looked like it would become an upset, Star Wars: The Force Awakens came from behind after losing the Friday top spot to Leonardo DiCaprio's The Revenant , but regained its lead on Saturday to claim on Sunday the #1 position for the fourth week in a row with $41.6 million against overachiever 'The Revenant' which finished on the second spot with $38 million. The Star Wars Episode VII is currently North America's all time box office champion after it shattered the previous record held by 2009's Avatar of $760 million. The Lucasfilm production currently has $812 million in domestic gross, the first time ever a film crosses the $800 million mark domestically. The Disney film also opened strong in China yesterday with a Saturday record of $53 million. Only Furious 7 has a better opening weekend, $68 million, but had the advantage of opening on a Friday while 'The Force' opened on a Saturday. Adding all these numbers, the J.J. Abrams franchise reboot took the third spot in the All Time Worldwide box office record with $1.7 billion, pushing aside Jurassic World to the number fourth position. Now the real challenge starts to not only reach the $2 billion mark, but to tie or beat Titanic's $2.1 billion for the #2 spot. To reach and beat 'Avatar' the new Star Wars will have to gross an additional $1 billion which seems a tough call right now unless the China numbers remain strong for the next four weeks before it is removed from the Mandarin cinemas as their local regulations stipulated.

The Revenant beat all predictions and had strong expanded release. Predictor's were putting its numbers in the low $20 million, but they forgot to take in consideration the star power of Leonardo DiCaprio whose last five films have opened around the $30 million mark. Its $38 million marks the best wide opening for DiCaprio as well for its director, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu (Birdman). The film also benefitted from its Golden Globe nominations (Best picture, Best Actor).

Still doing great business is the Mark Wahlberg/Will Ferrell comedy Daddy's Home which moved to the third spot with $15 million for a current total of $116 million.

Debuting in the fourth spot is the horror film The Forest which took a decent $13 million.

Sisters moved down to the fifth spot with $7.1 million for a four weeks total of $74 million.

Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight had a 59.6% drop and tied in the sixth spot with The Big Short with $6.3 million. The fact that the film added over 369 more screens and still underperformed doesn't spell good news for Tarantino's cuss-a-thon western.

In other part of the chart, the critically acclaimed and awards darling gay melodrama Carol failed to lure audiences even after expanding to 526 screens. The film took only $1.4 million for an 8 weeks total of $6.9 million. While the Weinstein Company is not releasing the actual budget of this period drama, I am sure that it cost no less than $30 million and that Cate Blanchet and Rooney Mara's salary was around $3-$4 million each. No one is calling this a box office turkey, because, you know, that would offend certain groups and violated the civil rights of others.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens won't catch Avatar. The James Cameron film remained #1 at the box office for many weeks not only in North America but in many countries too. The Force Awakens has not performed so great in Asia and many Latin America countries where 'Star Wars' lacks the kind of following it has in the USA & UK. It couldn't get the #1 spot when it opened in South Korea & the Philippines, losing to local films debuts. 'Avatar' was immensely popular worldwide and made $2 billion on the international market alone. It is highly unlikely that 'The Force' will make those numbers internationally.

What's reason(s) why the Chop-Suey don't like Star Wars then? :dunno:

The original films were not released in China during the Cold War. They only got a glimpse of the prequels on home video and bootlegs. In other words for the majority of the Chinese population Star Wars was something they didn't knew much about.

I see that, but also a glance at the top 10 grossing movies in China:
Furious 7, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Avatar, Jurassic World - all in the Top 10 so I don't see why Star Wars can't be up there too, regardless of whether they don't know anything about it.

Weird fucking people, the Chinesers... :dunno:

It will be among them, but not at the top. For the next film, Disney most likely will insert a famous Chinese actor among the cast. :palm:

    Wow. Just wow.

On its second weekend in China 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' had a disastrous 70% drop earning only $6.4 million and getting beaten by a local animated cartoon sequel Boonie Bears III which is based on a popular children show, sort of like what Barney was to the West. At this pace the SW movie will end its limited five weeks run in the Mandarin country with a little over $100 million. The Force was not strong enough in Asia.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens ended its Chinese run with a total of $122 million after five weeks. Meanwhile 'Kung Fu Panda 3' has grossed there $100 million in just 10 days! Wow. I mean 'Kung Fu Panda 3' total foreign grosses til today is $129 million, meaning that had the Chinese not embraced the film it would have been a bomb!

SW: The Force Awakens while it has passed the $2 billion mark worldwide, it is NOT the most successful 2015 movie internationally. That honor still belongs to Furious 7 with $1.169 billion of which $390 million came from China alone.
