The Revenant (aka the 2015 remake of Man in The Wilderness) Leonardo DiCaprio plays the same role Richard Harris did better in 1971 in an also much better film. While the original wasted no time in putting the plot in motion and telling the same fascinating story in a time frame of 1 hour 44 minutes, this new version spends time introducing characters and yadda yadda before the main story starts its course to ran over 2 hours and 40 minutes. Then after Leo is left for dead and he 'returns back from the grave', he turns into freaking Marvel's Wolverine! I mean, the healing capabilities of Leo's Hugh Glass would be the envy of Hugh Jackman: mauled savagely by the HUGE grizzly bear TWICE, tossed like a doll in strong rapids to fell TWICE from high falls, only to come out unscratched and WALKING (something he couldn't do before entering the river), attacked by indians, excuse me, Native Americans, and falling off a cliff like a 100 meters below…and no scratches, no broken bones, oh, but his horse died instantly. Then on the final showdown he gets stabbed a few times, bitten, etc etc. Our fearless mutant survives everything! There are a few differences between the two films, though. While the 1971 version starts as a journey of revenge and ends with a resolution of forgiveness, this one goes all out death wish at the end. Also this one has too many dream sequences for its own good. the Native Americans were presented in a better light in the original; here they are savages. Tom Hardy deserves an Academy award though. He was really good as the dirty rotten bad dude. Leo was good too, but Hardy was better. If you can overlook the fails in logic in this film you will be entertained. 6/10

Great movie. Easily Best Picture of the year. Lived up to all the hype. 9/10.

Not worthy of being put into The Revenant thread though?

    Shit film. 3/10

Acting was good but that was about it. Leo's performance was indeed Oscar worthy but this film shouldn't have been nominated. Boring, disjointed pointless plot. Just not a good film.

I can't overlook them and neither can I overlook how unnecessarily long and drawn out it was with so much dead space. I almost fell asleep.

I mean...why at the end would they just take two men to track down this evil killer? I mean made no sense at all. And the ending was totally unsatisfying and forgettable.

All the hype and for what. Fuckers need to give me by $24 back.

    A 9 and a 3.
    Hummmm.....polarizing!

What didn't you like about it Sly? (btw, I thought it was okay but not on the massive high scale that everyone seems to have it)

I don't know where to begin...

I'll start off with what I liked: the very beginning. The film started strong and got your attention with the opening massacre and then the bear mauling scene and then the build up to and execution of Tom Hardy's evil and betrayal.

Then...it went to hell. What followed was 2 hours of tedious cinema: Leo recovering faster than Wolverine from the X men (as Panchy said on another thread)...the whole French group vs the Natives vs the Americans was not really written well...except the French kidnapped some native girl and were raping her....and the Americans had been bothering the natives with typical white man evil...but so what? It just wasn't put together well and just didn't fit in well with the main narrative. But I could have lived with all of that if the ending was more satisfying. They seemed to run out of ideas and just rushed the end without setting it up properly.

I wont say anymore on the end so as not to spoil it, but you saw it....you really think that they wrote and executed the ending well?

I think DiCaprio's a good actor but there are very few of his movies I really like.

And I despised Inarritu's last movie, Birdman.

I stand by my opinion that it was excellent, but I can tell that this is gonna be one of those polarizing movies.

Oh, and as far as the acting performances go.... I think Hardy out-acted Leo, and I think Hardy deserves best supporting actor.

I thought Hardy did a good job, but it wasn't outstanding like some other villains in the past. Put it this way he was nowhere near as good as Hackman in "Unforgiven" for example.

That has nothing to do with THIS YEAR though. You can't compare him to an all time great villains, and say he doesn't deserve the award because he doesn't stack up.

Look at the nominees for Best Supporting. Here they are:

    Christian Bale ("The Big Short")
    Tom Hardy ("The Revenant")
    Mark Ruffalo ("Spotlight")
    Mark Rylance ("Bridge of Spies")
    Sylvester Stallone ("Creed")

Now, I haven't seen Bridge of Spies yet, so I can't speak on Mark Rylance's performance. But I saw the rest. Hardy in The Revenant was a better performance than Bale in The Big Short, Stallone in Creed, and Ruffalo in Spotlight. Therefore, IMO he deserves the award. He doesn't need to be as good as Hackman in Unforgiven. Simply better than the other nominees.

Pretty weak Best Supporting list this year, I must say. Neither Bale, Stallone, nor Ruffalo's performances were anything mind blowing, tbh. Hardy's performance wasn't some all time great either, but it was the best of the bunch.

    Fair enough.

I didn't think his performance was better than Leo's though, which was more my point.

    I don't rate this a top 3 Leo performance.

I thought he was much better in The Aviator, Wolf of Wall Street, and Basketball Diaries than he was in this. He was also very good in J.Edgar. The movie itself was dull, but Leo's performance was rock solid. I still want him to get the award this year though, simply because he got fucked 2 years ago.

He will win Best Actor, IMO.

And The Revenant will win Best Picture.

Therefore, the academy will fuck Hardy - because they won't let The Revenant sweep every category. They'll give Best Supporting Actor to Christian Bale, I'm almost sure of it.

no way Hardy was better than Leo. Hell, i thought Hardy actually played it safe. In fact, in many instances, i actually felt for Hardy's character and felt he was right. Stallone was better than Hardy in Creed IMO. He definately put in more work. Hardy is a better actor, than stallone, but imo he didnt try hard enough to get the award.

IMO this was leo's best performance. It was him about 80% on the screen pretty much not saying shit. It was all acting. And the way the film was shot, and edited was brilliant. The long takes were fucking crazy. I stood up a few times in the theater shocked at how the hell this director pull off these shots.

It's fucking brilliant. It's a simple story of a man's desire to live. His stubbornness to not give up. You saw it in the bear scene. He could have just played dead and the bear would have left. But his stubbornness to win kept him going. And Hardy had nothing on the bear. Hardy wasnt a smart guy. Leo's injuries helped hardy last longer than normal. A healthy leo takes hardy out in a few seconds as you saw in the end. But Leo was battling his body, the elements, Indians, etc. He had to overcome so much. And remember, this is partially based on true events.

Also the way it was shot was insane. You really could feel everything leo was going through. Iñárritu is very skilled.

i was with my wife a few friends and stood up twice saying "did you see that shit?" people were like what? I sat down in disgust. Then i jumped up again at another scene. I really admire things i normally dont see in film making so i get all excited.

Interesting. I didn't like the film much at all. I would never watch it again and felt I had wasted my time. Even in terms of survival elements in films I felt far more connected to 127 hours, Castaway and "The Grey" than this film. I honestly felt that this film sucked.

Agreed with Anthony that it was a great movie. Leo was excellent, but I disagree that his was best performance. I thought Hardy was very good. Hardy's become a top 5 actor in terms of quality.

I think Hardy has peaked IMO. I felt his performance in Locke was overrated. I actually loved his performance as Bane and in Warrior. His performance in Mad Max wasnt anything special. Anyone could have played that.
