Little girl in "Man on Fire" was a good performance.

 

I think there's one that easily stands apart from the rest:

Lil Ze in City of God.

Dakota Fanning and Haley Joel Osmont were the first two that came to mind for me to. They both had a least a couple that made you think that kids shouldn't be able to give these types of performances. Osmont was pretty great in A.I. to.

Sean Nelson in "Fresh" crossed my mind to.

The little kid in "Searching for Bobby Fischer"

 

Sean Nelson in Fresh was the first to come to mind. He was brilliant. A lot of depth and complexity to his character.

Haley Joel Osmont was terrific in The Sixth Sense. I can't believe Jake Lloyd got the Anakin Skywalker role over him.

Christian Bale in Empire Of The Sun

 

The Best child actors ever were Mickey Rooney & Shirley Temple. No one has come close to those two.

Spain's Marisol (Pepa Flores) was the GOAT: she could act, she could sing, she could dance, she moonlighted as a successful recording artist. She was great at both comedies and dramas. Best of all: she grew into a beautiful woman and was never involved in any scandal for doing drugs or alcohol. And she retired from show business in her prime to pursue a normal life and never came back!

Moretz is a really good young actress.

I never saw The Piano but I think it was that movie in which Anna Paquin won an Oscar. How does her performance there compare to the others mentioned above?

 

Anna Paquin's Oscar winning performance was not particularly memorable and both her nomination and victory remains kind of a WTF moment in the Academy's history. Was she better than Emma Thompson, Wynona Ryder or her own 'The Piano" co-star, Holly Hunter in 'The Firm'? No way. Ah, but it was a Jane Campion film and the Academy was licking her vagina from the start, so what the hell, they gave Paquin the Oscar because she was in a Jane Campion film.

 

It's tough to pick one, but here's my list:

Linda Blair - The Exorcist
River Pheonix - Stand by me
Haley Joel Osment - The sixth sense
Henry Thomas - E.T.

Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz?

 

Shakeandbake, you're talking late stage teenagers now with DiCaprio and Garland. Probably a separate category.

 

Jodie Foster - Taxi Driver

Tatum O'Neal - Paper Moon and Bad News Bears

 

DiCaprio, Foster & Garland were teenagers in those roles. I am more impressed with a child under 10 pulling a great performance than a 16-17 year old.

Foster was barely a teenager, if she even was yet when "Taxi Driver" was filmed.
