20th Century Fox has greenlighted a sequel to the original 1980 "Flash Gordon". Director Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass) is attached to direct it and is currently working with some A-list writers to bring 'a unique Flash Gordon movie unlike anything you have seen before'. Will Sam Jones return to the role like he did in the TED movies or some younger actor will replace him?

Flash Gordon had glowing reviews when it was released on 1980 and still holds an 82% fresh at rottentomatoes (that is 1% higher than the 12 Academy awards Nominated almost sure Oscar winner 'The Revenant'). The movie was campy fun and remains a cult classic.

I saw Flash Gordon in the theaters as a kid when it came out, and to this day, if I'm flipping through the channels and it's on, I'm watching it.

In spite of it being very dated and real campy, still a better superhero movie than the big budget CGI crap that's come out in the past 2 decades.

Why is it anytime I post about something I like or don't like, you claim I'm 'trying too hard'? What is it you think I'm trying to accomplish?

Flash Gordon had special effects and they were fucking horrible. Flash Gordon aint shit compared to some of these super hero movies like Nolan's batman and Winter Soldier.

"Oh yeah, well like, I seen Zeppelin 3 times now man: Kezar Stadium in '73, they were ok, the drugs were kicking in though...then the Silverdome in '77, all-time record attendance, dude, but by then the ego & paranoia had taken hold....but for me, the reunion at the O2 in '07 with Jason Bonham on drums? Man, that was the SHIT"

You are such a twat, TFK.

It's weird that me not caring for big budget superhero movies bothers you so much.

I enjoyed more 'Flash Gordon' on repeated viewings than that overrated remake.

Not a remake. And just because you enjoy something more, doesnt make it a better movie.

Apples & oranges. The special effects were made intentionally horrible as a homage and pun to the original Buster Crabbe serial. It wasn't trying to be 'The Empire Strikes back' that came out that same year. If you are comparing 'Flash Gordon' to Nolan's Batman or Winter Soldier you are missing the point completely. I s like comparing 'Ferris Bueller Day Off' to 'Platoon'. :nono:

Not from the general public. And less than 40 people reviewed it.

    You cant compare the two.

The graphics were not made intentionally horrible. That was the budget they had. That is what SFX looked like during that time.

The movie had a $27 million budget sort of like today's $200 million budget. 'the Empire Strikes Back' cost only $18 million. They had the resources, but the director wanted to have the spfx to look not only retro 30's, but also to look cheap. Is all stated in the Making Of Flash Gordon.

Show me a movie in 1980s that didnt have shooting lasers look like that? Big Trouble in little china had a high budget too and their graphics looks just as bad. Flash Gordon only has a cult following. THe majority of the public thought it sucked.

Here's the thing with me and Flash Gordon. When I saw it for the first time, I was 8 years old and saw it in the theater. As a kid, I loved it. When VCRs became a thing, my friends had a copy of it, and we watched it all the time. Later it hit cable and was on all the time. I grew up with the movie. Maybe if I was 40 rather than 8 the first time I saw it, I wouldn't think it was any good, although I'm sure I would appreciate the campiness of it, and at the very least, the soundtrack. But to me it's a classic and has always been.

I look at today's superhero movies the same way. Maybe if I saw the Batman or Captain America movies when I was 8, I'd be impressed by all of the explosions and CGI effects. But as a grown man, they do absolutely nothing for me. They just seem silly to me and geared towards children. And I don't have any childhood connection to superheros, as I never read comic books as a kid, and all the superhero TV shows back in the day (Wonder Woman, Hulk, Batman, etc) are nothing at all like the movies today.

So at the end of the day, yes, Flash Gordon is much better than any modern superhero movie.
