Hardy is better than Gyllenhal, as is Fassbender and a few other guys.

Saw it last night. Taught, grimy movie. The opening tracking shot (though it was most likely not a real tracking shot) was incredible. Like Anthony said Inarittu is skilled whether you like his films or not. He hides his edits incredibly well.

Most of the movie is a slow burn, so a lot of people won't like it. I do know, Leo made me feel like he was suffering, and the whole atmosphere of the film made me feel the cold that the characters were feeling.

Leo had the most physically demanding role, while Hardy by far had the most dialogue and was the most well rounded character of the two. What I liked most about Hardy's character, is I doubt I would have ever figured out it was Tom Hardy, if I didn't already know that was him. I thought he gave his character much more complexity then what was probably on the page of the screenplay.

I don't know if it's a re-watchable movie right now, I'm leaning towards no. I've seen Mad Max 3 times already and enjoy it just as much each time. I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to Leo doing his version of "Passion Of The Christ" again, anytime soon.

    8/10

Did you think Hardy was a bad guy or just dealt a bad hand? I think it was a bit of both.

yup. Other than the bear, it would be tough to find what was CGI and what wasn't. just an amazing film maker.

I saw him as slightly cowardly (compared to Leo's character anyways), and an opportunist, but far from evil. Lots of worse things he could have done throughout the course of the film then he did. Most bad things he did was a circumstance of the situation. He also had a high survival instinct, but was not nearly as smart or as practical as Leo's character.

Yeah, I stuck around for the credits and was amazed at how many digital and CGI artists were employed by the film. It wouldn't shock me if it was filmed in the middle of the Summer and all the snow and ice was added in post. You wouldn't know it from watching the movie though.

well he was clearly a coward, but his fear was from Leo, not so much Indians or the elements. But he was a survivor. But he was right about Leo causing those Indians to attack by revealing their location. And he was right about leaving Leo behind. Me and my wife were in a debate about weather Leo made the deal to let him kill him by blinking. She said he had to blink, he didnt want to. I said maybe, but why was the blink so long. What were your thoughts?

I thought he blinked to save his son, but was somewhat forced into it. Once Hardy killed his kid to shut him up, all bets were off.

yeah but then at the end, leo says there was no deal.

  14. Personally, I saw Hardy's character as a straight up villain. From the beginning he showed a nasty streak.

  15. The blinking thing was a witch hunt. EVERYONE has to blink eventually. Leo knew it was a witch hunt and so he just gave in and did the long blink. Obviously he wanted to live.

I'm conflicted about it, but in the end it doesn't matter. Once he killed Leo's son, shit was on.

By the score you gave this movie, it's clear, to me anyways, that you just looked at the surface of this movie. Im guessing you were drunk, hungry or tired.

He was a bad guy, but it wasn't completely without context. He hated Indians but we learned exactly why he hated them so much. He had his chance to kill Leo straight up, but never followed through on it. He could have killed Bridger (who was a huge loose end for him) easily, and blamed it on the Indians like he did with Hawk.

He also saved bridger earlier in the movie, so he does have a little bit of a heart for the kid.

He did try to kill that cunt, but lucky him there were no bullets/pellets in his rifle when he pulled the trigger.

Wondering if anybody else saw the following the same as me, or did I miss something.

The Indian War Party that was looking for Powaqa's daughter. Was that whole thing a case of mistaken identity? They went after the English trappers when they should have been going after the French trappers/traders (who were their allies) who had his daughter all along, instead. Did I read that right?

oh please. As if he couldnt bash his head in. And that was much later.

I think he knew that already. Otherwise he would have just shot him with one of his other guns.

I dont think so. If you remember when the french trappers said "bring me the girl, those horses werent free" IMO that was clear the Indians traded her for the horses. i dont think that was his daughter. I dont think they ever found her.

  25. Nobleart

    Nobleart Narwhal King

Ah, I wasn't sure if that was actually his daughter or not. Thought maybe the girl was an Indian slave they took from another tribe. But then she found her way back to the War Party at the end. Why the fuck would they leave somebody from their own tribe behind with those French assholes?

Which proves again what a failed movie it was at times.

Because women aint shit to Indians man. And those Indians were savage as fuck. You think Some squaw is anything compared to his daughter? They needed those horses.
