I mean scary in a creepy way...supernatural etc...not scary is in makes you jump.

Which films freaked you out when you first saw them?

The Omen (original) - is a joke to watch now, but when I saw it as a kid, freaked me the hell out
The Shining - That old lady coming out of the bathtub, those twins...scary shit
    The Ring - Unpleasant
Sixth Sense - I aint gonna lie, didn't want to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom for quite a while after watching that shit
Nightmare in Elm Street (Original) - The sequels were comedies but the original was creepy as shit
    Amityville
    Sinister - Unpleasant

I didn't mentioned The Exorcist because I haven't watched it.

The Shining: also when the little kid is riding around the hotel (using the then-new Steadicam) - and the two girls are standing at the end of the corridor:

The Omen: the kid is just fucking creepy - waving at the Rottweiler:

Thinking back to being scared as kids, obviously. Adults don't typically get scared by horrors.

The Shining is the best/scariest horror movie of all time. I think that's generally accepted by the majority of people.

The best outta the REST of that list is The Amityville Horror. Obviously, the 70s version with Josh Brolin's dad. Not the shitty 00s remake with Ryan Reynolds.

3rd best on that list is The Omen.

4th is The Ring, which is a good horror movie, but falls short of all time great.

Sinister had it's moments. But generally, I didn't find it anything special. It was a DECENT horror flick.

The Sixth Sense is a good movie, but not particularly scary at all. Not to me at least.

And DEAD LAST we have Freddy. Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the stupidest fuckin horror movies of all time. The entire Freddy franchise is shit.

Even Candyman is a far better horror movie than any of the Freddy movies.

Child's Play is a better horror movie than Nightmare on Elm Street.

First Elm street scared the shit out of me. Very different to the sequels as I said so don't confuse it with them.

Child's play was silly, but did you ever see the short film that inspired it? Now THAT was scary shit.

The Amityville Horror - I vaguely remember it but didn't really impact on me, even as a teen. Funnily enough, IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes just don't rate it at all.

    Great poster though:

I've SEEN the first Elm Street. Even as a kid, Freddy failed to scare me. I tried to re-watch it a few months ago on Netflix, and cut it off 15 mins in. It hasn't aged well.... it's just a joke now.

The first Child's Play is more creepy than Nightmare on Elm Street. Not to say Chucky is even scary, but Freddy's a joke.

Did not see the short film which inspired Chucky, but I do know he's based on Robert the doll.

As a child I was scared to death by El Vampiro (The Vampire) the legendary Mexican film that became so influential to vampire films around the world.
The Exorcist gave me a panic attack when I watched it on its opening weekend. 14 year old Panchy thought (wrongly) that nothing could scare him anymore. avoided re-watching that film for two decades

George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead gave me more nightmares than any other films that I have watched before or since. That was my baptism of fire with the zombie genre and I remain not a fan. :nono:

The Thing it didn't scared me, but man that was one CREEPY ride. I love that film because it was closer to the Joseph Campbell short story 'Who Goes There?' than to 'The Thing From Another World' from the 50's which was loosely based on the Campbell story.

The Omen up until watching that film, Panchy had little interest in reading the bible. As soon as Panchy returned from the movie theater, he grabbed a bible and read the whole Book of Revelations...which scared Panchy more than the film  then Panchy decided to understand what it all mean, thus was the start of his lifelong, life transforming Christian spiritual journey.

The Shining still scares me. The Exorcist never really did. Maybe because I am a heathen?

I watched Child's Play many years later and I was cracking up during a lot of it,
but Chucky is indeed a scary bastard. I dont like dolls now.

Blair Witch Project didn't scare me, except the ending. I did like that ending a lot. They did a great job marketing the movie with the found footage thing, similar to Cannibal Holocaust (that is one fucked up movie).

    It Follows was pretty good.

The original Halloween is classic. I love the camerawork/direction.

It didn't scare me but it was a very good movie. My favorite Hitchcock movie.

I still remember watching it when I was 5 or 6, my dad let me watch it, even the shower scene, and he's all explaining the technical brilliance of the edits and stuff like I'm supposed to get it. I watched way too much violence on TV as a kid.

The first Child's Play is indeed scary to watch, if you're a kid. It's not really scary for adults, but you could see how it woulda scared the shit outta you as a youngster. After the first Child's Play, the franchise became more of a dark comedy almost.

But yeah, The Shining is STILL a scary movie to watch.... even now as an adult. Easily the GOAT horror movie. Hard to imagine there ever being a horror movie as good as The Shining again.

My daughters (ages 15 & 13) watched 'The Shinning' a few months ago and even though they were prepared to get scared, by the end they both stated that the film wasn't scary at all. I myself never found it scary to be honest...laughable at times with Nicholson's over-the-top scenery chewing performance.

I can't take someone seriously who discredits The Shining, yet claims Avatar is a great movie.

The Shining isn't that scary today...but back in the day it was terrifying. Much like most horrors.

As an adult though the scariest scene in the Shinning is the "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy" typewriter scene. That's when you know beyond the shadow of a doubt that he's fucked out of his mind.

The Shining is a good movie..but scary now? if you watch it now you'll find that it's one of the most unintentionally funny movies ever made

    1) Nicholson talking to the bartender
    2) Nicholson getting angry at his wife
3 Nicholsons reaction to kissing that old lady

    funny stuff
just look at this...so fucking funny that dozens of people uploaded it on youtube and hundreds left 'lol' comments https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIqq9GusbSQ

I watched it on its second day of release in an almost empty movie theater. There were a few teenager girls that sat two rows behind me and at first they were giggling if they will be too scared. By the end of the film I hear them talking what a lame horror movie it was. I agree. That film keeps building, and building and building and when it delivers it isn't what you expected. I am sure that if this film werent' directed by Stanley Kubrick it will not get as much praise as it gets.

Rosemarie's Baby was pretty disturbing when it came out.

Curse of The Demon (1957) was a very effective occult film until it was ruined at the end when they showed a close-up of the funny looking demon.

The original Val Lewton's Cat People was the first and most effective film in psychological terror. The 1982 remake was very good, but not nearly as scary as the original as it showed everything while the Val Lewton film left everything up to our imaginations.

And of course, it gets tons of priase cos of Nicholson's way over-the-top acting which people can identify with, quote and parody:
