The Legend of Hell House (1973) a very underrated horror gem starring Britain's favorite scream queen, Pamela Franklin & Roddy McDowell with a screenplay by SF/horror great Richard Matheson. My all time favorite haunted house film. Has dated bad, but is still very entertaining.

The Innocents (1961) spookiest film ever. Great film.

The Haunting (1963) do not confuse with that awful, awful 1990 remake. This film scared the living hell out of me, my brother & my mom when we watched it on tv on a Sunday night. A masterpiece by Robert Wise at the top of his skills.

I found The Ring to be the scariest/creepiest horror I'd ever seen. I like the criteria you layed out about being horrifying, without relying solely on shit popping out on you. The Ring incorporates some pop-out shit, but to me the scene of the girl walking out of the TV is the most horrifying thing I've seen in a movie and have difficulty watching it without raising goosebumps.. it ties so well with the theme of the movie, starting from the kids watching that tape in the cabin. The whole movie is really well done too, but such a great climax there.

Another creepy movie you've probably never heard of is 'Grandmothers house'. For some reason the name at the time I watched it was 'Grandmas house' but I guess it got changed. Irky, creepy, and horrifying.

The sixth sense didn't do alot for me. Felt like alot of 'blue balls' going on throughout it.

I remember as a kid the whole Amityville Horror thing, and found the movie terrifying. Nowadays it's a pretty low rent film with some bad acting and a nice theme track. Still enjoy it though.

I always thought that a remake could be done in a really suspenseful and psychological way, but the Ryan Reynolds remake was absolute Michael Bay crap.

I have not watched either. When the original came out it had really bad reviews, but it was a moderate hit. Sequels never grasped my attention, much less the remake.

Yeah, Samara coming out of the TV screen was most unpleasant and her face at the end was the stuff of nightmares.

The Strangers, to me is easily the best/scariest horror movie of the last 25 years. I just wasn't sure if it counted as a slasher flick. I don't view it as one.

I thought, "The Others" was the cleverest.

Session 9 is a really good and creepy/well done horror movie. One of the more underrated horror movies.

I think The Ring is the best MAINSTREAM horror movie of the last 15 years or so. But 97% of mainstream horror movies are horrible. The Ring was definitely better than the VAST majority of them.

Independant movie that got a short releae and went to DVD.
It's patchy and has holes in it, but because it was shot in a real abandoned asylum (apparantly where the first frontal-lobotomies were carried out) and deals with mental illness, the eerieness and creepiness is definately there.

The Shining rules even to this day for me.

Stephen King's IT as a kid was scary as hell to me. Right now?? Makes me laugh. But that clown scared the shit outta me, I won't deny.

    Don't forget about Pet Semetary.

    Slasher films are wack.

    The Awakening
The Blair Witch Project (I was genuinely freaked out when I watched this on my own)
The Ring (The bit where the girl comes out of the TV is fucking freaky lol)
    Insidious
    Psycho
    The Woman in Black
    The Grudge
    The Wicker Man

    This.

I had nightmares after seeing IT for the first time. Didn't stop me from watching it over and over again as a young teenager though

The Haunting is an excellent haunted house movie. Arguably, the best ever.

I can't remember which one it was, but the scene where the kid slices the girl's face with a knife pissed me right off. I wanted to punch that kid in the face several times after he did that to her.

Jack Torrance (the character Nicholson plays), is completely different to the Jack Torrance in the book. Stephen King didn't like the movie.

Did you watched the tv movie that was more faithful to the book? I thought it was as good as the Kubrick version, but with way less budget to spend and no over-the-top performances.

I vaguely remember it but can't find it on youtube. To be honest, I did like The Shining film but I wouldn't put it in my all-time favourite horror film list. Shelley Duvall is VERY annoying in the film and the way she plays Wendy is so over the top.

    How? Why?

This was one of the first VHS video-tape movies me and my bro hired from our local store (aged 15 and 12) and we thought it was highly entertaining and hugely funny.

I don't know why it had such an impact on 18 year old Panchy. I didn't found the make-up scary and the actors performances were cartoonish, but the film evoked something new Panchy was not exposed before: worldwide plague where man-eating corpses outnumbered surviving humans. I think it was that doom scenario what I still find more disturbing than anything else...nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...they will get us eventually. [IMG]

We looked on it as a fun-but-macabre shoot ´em up: that entire shoppong mall to yourselves and you can pick off zombies for fun...
