First there was The Sound of Music Live. Then came 'Peter Pan: Live'. Now, on January 31 comes 'Grease: Live'.

BTW this dude looks more like the late Jeff Conway than John Travolta. Julianne Hough looks better than Olivia Newton John, but I don't know how good a singer she is. We know she is a GREAT dancer, though.

Ok, I just checked a couple of old video songs from Julianne Hough and this girl really has the vocal chops needed for the role. So that is in the bag.

She is incredibly sexy when she does the dancing gig. Check her lip Synch of 'I Just Had Sex'.

Gee one of my small beefs with the original 'Grease' movie was the age of the actors as a couple of them were in their 30's (Olivia Newton-John 30, Stockhard Channing 34) and the rest in their mid or late 20's with Travolta (24), Lorenzo Lamas (20) & Dinah Manoff (19) being he youngest ones. Except for Lamas & Manoff the rest looked way too old to be playing teenagers. In this live version the youngest one is Vanessa Hudgens, 26, with the rest in their 30s or pushing 30.

Dinah Manoff in "Grease' and now

Grease: Live Watched this excellent production last night on a very bad stream (I don't have FOX channel) and as frustrating as it is to watch something that keeps freezing and lagging constantly, I just kept watching and today I rewatched most of the musical scenes on youtube on HD so I can have a better judgment and my verdict is that this live production nailed it. It mixed both the stage play with the best of the film version (it even borrowed its two more famous songs that were written for the film by Barry Gibb) and the result was satisfying for the most part. The show started with Jessie J belching the 'Grease' song while the camera followed her from the backstage to the street were a live audience and actors and dancers tolerated some unexpected betrayal by rain, but the show went on. It also went on for Vanessa Hudgens, who despite the fact of losing her dad to cancer the night before, she not only did not cancelled, but gave the greatest performance of the night. Honestly, I was waiting to be wowed by Julianne Hough (and I was), but Hudgens just killed it as Rizzo in an Emmy worthy performance. She was that good. As I mentioned before, Hough was amazing as Sandy and comparisons with Olivia Newton-John were inevitable and while she doesn't have Newton-John's vocal range, she did a pretty good job even in her solo song 'Hopelessly Devoted to you' despite the audio static noise that almost ruined it. Aaron Tveit was okay in his too obvious imitation of Travolta, but at least he didn't embarrassed himself. Keke Palmer also killed in her show stopping number 'Freddy My Love' even though I thought she was the wrong actress for the role of Marty (DIVERSITY AT ALL COSTS, DAMN IT!!!). Never heard of this gal before, but she has real singing talent. Criminally underused was Carly Rae Jepner as Frenchy, I mean they gave her one new original song so she could too have something to sing solo and that was the worst song of the whole show. Plus she seemed too 'normal' and lacked the original Frenchy annoying voice. Another miscast actor was Mario Lopez playing Vince Fountaine as Mario Lopez. I was not that thrilled with Boys II Men performing 'Beauty School Drop Out' but they were decent. On a positive note the best singer of the night was that kid from Disney, Jordan Fisher, who did the BEST ever interpretation of 'Those Magic Changes' and finally put another T-Byrd member to take the spotlight from Danny & Kinicky (who wasn't so good anyway). Leaving my beef aside this was a highly enjoyable production with great sets, amazing choreography and can stand next to the 1978 film without feeling inferior. FOX had the best ratings ever that doesn't involved a sport event and critics are raving about it. 9/10

    Good review Panchy.
How does it stack up against the movie? I mean, people are going to make so many comparisons and there were loads of little touches in the movie that people can memorize....

I think the biggest news about this thread is that Panchy doesnt have the Fox Channel. How the hell do you not have a prime time channel? Unless you dont have any TV at all.

I cut the tv cable two years ago and FOX is not among the free channels you can get on an air antenna on my area. Before cutting the cable I was paying $220 monthly to the cable company. Now I pay only $78 for the internet.

The camera definitely loved her little ass every time she slightly bended over.

There's gay and then there's "Gay". This is some fairy dust nonsense.

This is like Liza Minelli fucking Nathan Lane silly. It's not technically "gay", but it is "Gay as fuck".

Please explain why 'Grease' is gay because I fail to see the connection of liking a straight old fashioned great musical to anything gay related.
