Carlos Ortiz, same boat as Hagler. SHARP puncher with good pop, but not freakish explosiveness and not freakish heavy hands.

I think i put forward a theory on this topic as being between the difference between plyometric and strength generated power. there's a similar phenomenon in jumping where - to take extremes for contrast - powerlifters can generally jump higher then NBA bastketballers but jump in a totally different style where they have to 'load up', bend their knees etc to get going (strength reliant power) rather than being able to spring fluently while on the move (more plyometric reliant power).

Antonio Margarito was heavy handed without having seriously concussive power.

Manny Pacquiao, however, is a law onto himself. We need to create a new category just for him. He's neither particularly heavy handed or explosive. But he has power of some sort no doubt. I guess it has more to do with speed/unpredictability and timing.

    Thoughts?

Pac at the lower weights was both. To say he wasn't heavy handed is absurd. The combination of having freakish strength in his punches AND having blinding handspeed made him devastatingly explosive.

Marciano is another example of what Double was talking about. Both heavy handed AND an explosive puncher, without having great handspeed.

Pac was certainly not what I would call explosive. Explosive is like Hearns, Jackson....when those punches land you're like "WHOA....WHAT.THE.FUCK!!". Pacquiao wasn't that. Secondly I wouldn't call him heavy handed because his punches didn't seem to land with a THUD if you know what I mean. He was somewhere in the middle or on the outside of those two things. A new category like I said. He was what i would call speed/placement power.

Marciano was more heavy handed than Explosive, truth be told. That one punch KO of Walcott was rare for Marciano...he more often than not simply bludgeoned his foes to death. He didn't have Louis type TNT in his fists.

Ernie Shavers was explosive and heavy handed without being fast.

Kov's KO of Sallakh is underrated. It was 'explosively effortless', if you will.

Pac made his name off of his "whoa wtf" left hand at lower weights. He even hurt Floyd with it 2 or 3 times.

Ricky Hatton still doesn't remember. (there could be some additional factors though)

Heavy hands are just that - every shot hurts, lots of power.
Explosive puncher (knockout artist) is a combination of pop, speed and most importantly timing

At LHW, Kov is the heavy handed guy while Stevenson is the explosive one

I think Vitaly and Wlad are good examples of heavy handed vs explosive. Mathysse is heavy handed, explosive and not too fast.

Yeah I'd agree with that, although Kovalev is capable of being explosive too.

Maidana, Chavez, Tszyu, Quartey, Vitali heavy handed.

Kendall Holt, Zab Judah, Adrien Broner explosive power.

    Randall Bailey, Oscar both.
