As expected critics are trashing it, but audiences like it. Not your typical Faith-based film, but mainly your typical Hollywood biblical production on a modest to low budget (it cost only $20 million, the same amount used for catering services for NOAH). Directed by Hollywood veteran Kevin Reynolds (Waterworld, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves) and starring Joseph Fiennes (Enemy at the Gates, Luther). Why this film was released now and not on Easter? :dunno:

Ironically, the famous movie which Risen looks similar to...

After the resurrection Jesus appeared to his followers for 40 days before he rose to Heaven in the clouds. Was seen by 500 witnesses.

So was that roman soldier a follower? Or a non-believer?

In the movie he was sent by Pontius Pilate to seek and recover the body of the deceased Jewish sect leader to appease the Jewish Pharisees who claimed Jesus followers stole the cadaver from the sealed tomb guarded by a squad of Roman Soldiers. He was a non-believer, but apparently by the end he becomes a believer.

Risen (2016) Director Kevin Reynolds, who is no stranger to costume epics, tackles his first biblical film and the results are a typical Kevin Reynolds film of being hot & cold with the noteworthy exception that unlike Darren Aranofsky's & Ridley Scott's recent biblical heresies, he delivers a very authentic and respectful attempt to recreate the biblical tale. The plot centers on what could have happened right after the crucifixion of Yeshua (more praise to the director to avoid the anglo 'Jesus' name and go to the original hebrew name) as Pontius Pilate assigns the Roman Tribune Clavius (Joseph Fiennes in his first meaty role) to make sure that the jewish sect leader is truly dead and no one steals his corpse. Of course when the corpse disappears is pandemonium and Clavius has his hands full trying to locate the missing body. We have the New Zealander dude from 'Fear the walking Dead' as Yeshua in a secondary role. Clavius is a typical hardened by war soldier who barely have time for worrying about his religious convictions in the god Mars, but when confronted with the resurrected Yeshua all changes. The Malfoy bad boy from the Harry Potter films here plays Clavius eager young padawan who later turns into his persecutor. While I enjoyed the film for its painstaking effort toward accuracy, Fiennes performance and the first battle scene which was plain brilliant, the film drags at times at the middle of the story only to recoup its track towards the climax. My verdict: a likable fictional biblical tale in the same vein as Ben Hur, with less budget, which doesn't hit you in the head with the gospel, but that can be enjoyed by both Christians and secular audiences. 7/10

I stand corrected. I should have said historical speculative fiction.
