There's not even a way to assess Hagler's chances or how he would approach a bigger guy as never went above 160. Kovalev is surely too big and strong for the the Marvelous one.

I don't think there's a big gap between them. Hopkins in his prime was a truly awesome fighter. Had a much LONGER prime than Hagler.

But I think circa 82-83 Hagler was a bit better than any version of Hopkins.

 

Hagler was basically the best Middleweight on Earth from 1978-1987 in a good era

Hopkins was the best Middleweight in the world in one of the worst eras in the entire history of the division... There's no question Marvin was the superior fighter... Hopkins was a great fighter but I can't see a legit argument that he's a top 5 Middleweight all-time unless quality of opposition is all but completely disregarded... Top ten for sure just based on performance, the eye test, longevity,, etc.

 

Not disputing that Hagler was better, as I agree and always have.

But there's no massive gap between him. And it wouldn't be no walk in the park fight for Hagler, Hopkins would win his share of rounds.

But I do think once that final bell rings, that there would be no doubt that Hagler won the fight.

 

Good era my ass. Hagler's level of comp, with the exception of Hearns and Duran (who were blown up smaller fighters that had already been stopped by Leonard at a lower weight class), were on the same level as Hopkins'

Hopkins also beat two great smaller fighters in Trinidad and De La Hoya and he beat them more easily than Hagler beat Duran and Hearns. Echols, Holmes, Joppy, ...were no worse collectively than most of the goons Hagler fought. The names of goons just sound better when they fought in the 80s, that's all. Besides.....Hagler beating Pavlik and Tarver at 175lbs trumps any of Hagler's accomplishments.

 

And now Sly has to ruin whatever praise I gave Hopkins by saying utter bullshit.

Guys like Vito, Minter, Sibson, Hamsho, and Roldan were MUCH better than bum ass Echols, Holmes, and Joppy.

 

Not exactly bright to reference the De La Homo fight as an impressive Hopkins performance, considering the fight was a totally fuckin fixed sham.

 

Felix Trinidad would have ruined all of those guys listed at 160lbs, let alone Hopkins. Make no mistake about it. ESPECIALLY Vito and Roldan...who were basically punching bags. Hagler's competition is the most overrated in history, no exaggeration. He gets credit for beating Duran, who had already lost to Laing and Benitez at lower weights. I mean that's a JOKE if you think about it. If Hagler was so great he should have mopped the floor with Duran at Middleweight.

Y'all need to get out of the 80s' box and think objectively.

 

And Hearns would have smoked Tito at 160 (well, any weight).

Hearns would have given Hopkins a very difficult fight.

Whereas Trinidad vs Hagler would have been a plain massacre. Tito gets fucked up in 7 one sided rounds against the 83 Hagler.

If short-armed, no power, tiny Vito Antuofermo could go the distance with Hagler, I see no reason why Hagler would fuck up Tito with ease. Which fighter on Tito's level had Hagler ever fucked up with ease? Tiny Duran who had already lost a few times at lighter weights gave Marvin a hard fight.

Yeah Winky embarrassed Tito...but Tito was on the comeback trail after having briefly retired...and secondly...styles makes fights. Just because Winky was a southpaw...doesn't mean his style was identical to Hagler's. Vargas beat Winky and Tito annihilated Vargas. So please don't come back with this childish logic of Marvin doing what Winky did only better.

As for Hopkins vs Hearns. It's a different fight to Hagler-Hearns, 'cause Hopkins wouldn't brawl with hearns. It would have been a chessmatch in which Hopkins would have stopped him eventually. But Hopkins would have beaten Mugabo FAAAAAAAAAR easier than Hagler did. He would have utterly embarrassed him.

 

Exactly what i was thinking. Hagler is in no way levels above hopkins. In fact, cnsidering the success he had at higher weights, i dont think it is crazy to rate hopkins higher

 

Tommy Hearns would've beaten Hopkins convincingly at 160. Hagler-Hopkins is more competitive but Hopkins still loses.

Yep. A tall rangy boxer with a quick sharp jab that can find range and work is Hopkins nightmare. You think he'd beat Hagler by posing and countering but you're not considering the workrate that Hopkins can never really deal with against elite fighters.

If you can throw a certain amount of punches against Hopkins and not get knocked out its almost automatically a close fight. Hopkins isn't knocking Hagler out so it's really just Hagler making the decision to fight and work which is what he did and prime Hagler isn't going to Sugar Ray it against Hopkins.

Hearns is a VERY difficult stylistic matchup for Hopkins. Hagler had a different gear of pure killer aggression in him that Hopkins never had, even in his prime. And Hagler's chin was better. He was harder to hurt than Hopkins.

Make no mistake, Hearns could hurt Hopkins.

There's no convincing Sly. He probably thinks Hopkins KOS Hearns early. Cause ya know, Hopkins scored so many early KOs over quality comp.

And Hearns in Sly's warped world is probably more fragile than Antwun Echols.

 

Kovalev is still untested but considering Hagler wasn't a big middleweight, Kov is the clear favorite.

As for Hopkins vs Hagler, they are the same level.

When people speak of Hops these days (his speed, power and especially workrate) they think of the Hopkins of last 15 years.

I rewatched some Hopkins' bouts from 90s recently and I was suprised of how quick and active he was back then. If you haven't watched it lately, take a look and you'll see even the Tito Hopkins wasn't in his prime.

Also, Hopkins has always been one of those better-than-he-looks guys. He has fooled the eye-test several times.

Hagler might have been even better but it is very close between the two

 

Iran Barkley destroyed Hearns in 3. Just saying. Having said that I don't think Hopkins takes him out early, but he takes him out eventually. This is prime Hopkins we're talking about here not the 40+ man we saw in recent years.

 

When has Hearns ever beaten someone his height? A great fighter his height? Hearns would have never beaten Hopkins.

 

I have mad respect for Hearns, Leonard, Hagler and Duran. Big fan of the fabulous Four growing up. I just can't stand the way most of y'all act as though these guys were dipped in the river styx as babies. All four were proven to be rather beatable.

THey all had an Achilles heel. Hopkins is a heel, but he is not that heel.

 

"Prime" Hopkins comp was so shit and his biggest wins were so clearly "old Hopkins" that "prime" Hopkins is irrelevant. The main thing people talked about when he was younger was how he was such a great inside fighter and mauler yet in his biggest fight against a much smaller man he moved and boxed defensively and did so ever since, because that's when he stopped being an all-star club fighter and started fighting elite comp.
