Best boxing commentator ever

  1. My top 5 list
    Jim Lampley
    Ian Darke
    Barry Tompkins
    Larry merchant
    Joe tessitor

  2. Hut*Hut

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

I wouldn't even try to improve on the Classic hbo team, all the ingredients blended so well together....even that moron lederman's ocassional injections of inane shrillness added to the flavour

  3. Ali

    Ali Leap-Amateur

    George Foreman for me.

  4. Slice N Dice

Slice N Dice Big stiff idiot

Yeah the classic HBO team were great, on this side of the pond I go with Ian Darke.

  5. r o o s t e r

    r o o s t e r "Twinkle Toes" McJack

there's a special place in hell reserved for all british boxing commentators who aren't named ian darke

  6. Double L

    Double L Book Reader

steve albert. the guy just knew the game.

  7. Word. The rest are/ were pretty much garbage.

Harry Carpenter was terrible and Reg Gutteridge was so frightfully boring and inept that he should have been jailed for it. Jim watt is a cunt. The rest can kiss my ass.

  8. whiskey

    whiskey Czarcasm

I don't even know who any of these people are but this made me laugh.

  9. Xplosive

    Xplosive X-MOD Bad Motherfucker

I'll always always always prefer Barry Tompkins to Limpley.

  10. Hut*Hut

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

Jim 'Mr dead' watt is easily the worst ever. That old coot could ruin the FOTY single handedly

  11. They pretty much had the same voice and the same style. I give Lampley the edge because he was even more articulate and had a quicker comeback ability. For example when Tito fought Mamadou " doo doo" Thiam. Foreman said "you know 'doo doo' means 'darling' in French". Lampley without even skipping a beat says "and as a fighter he has some lovability, particularly if you like punchers".

    That's genius right there.

  12. Yeah he was terrible. Awful to listen to. Gutteridge was even worse though. I remember the 5th round of the Leomard Hearns rematch when Leonard was battering Hearns all over the ring. Gutteridge hardly said a word and his manner remained calm and bored as if we were in between rounds. Ridiculous.

Ugotabe Kidding WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

They do have the same voice but their style is different. Lampley is a freestyle rapper, he talks a lot and delivers on fly.

Tompkins is a poet. He talks lot less and tries to well-placed short sentences and captures the sentiments with few perfectly chosen words, such as 'That's all and we have a new era in boxing'

    I like both a lot

  14. cdogg187

    cdogg187 GLADYS

I like old-timey, impartial, non-rah-rah type of guys like Don Dunphy, personally... Here's the fighters, here's what they are doing... Minimalist.

  15. TraZ

    TraZ WBC Champion

    Lennox Lewis

  16. Xplosive

    Xplosive X-MOD Bad Motherfucker

Dunphy "TRY TO STOP ROBINSON! BANG!.....BANG!.....BANG!....BANG! TRY AND STOP HIM! BANG!... BANG!....BANG!....BANG!"

  17. mikE

    mikE "Twinkle Toes" McJack

    Bobby Czyz was the best.

  18. REEDsART

    REEDsART MATCHMAKER

REED Liked Dunphy Because he WASN'T Afraid to Allow the Action to Speak for Itself Sometimes...You Could Watch a Dunphy Broadcast and he'd Say NATHAN for 5-10 Seconds...Minimalist, as You Stated...REED Also Liked that Dunphy Rolled SOLO During his Commentary...

For that Same Reason, REED Would say Howard Cosell was his Favorite...Cosell was Don Dunphy w/an EGO...

The Team of Gil Clancy and Tim Ryan is VERY Underrated Nowadays...Like Xplosive, REED Would Say he Preferred Barry Tompkins to Jim Lampley as Well...Lamps is EXCELLENT @ his Craft, but Tooooooo Often Voices HBO's AGENDA...When Tompkins was HBO's Lead, the Network Lacked the GOD Complex it Now Has, Regarding Boxing....

I think solo was best for radio. If you can't see the action having two or more people talking just muddles it. You just want to know what's happening.

If I'm watching the fight live I can already see the action unfolding so I don't need to be told "Fighter A lands a jab on Fighter B". That's not to say a play by play man isn't necessary as it absolutely is, but because I can see the action "colour commentary" or an expert such as a trainer or current/former fighter can add a lot to the broadcast.

I'm also partly biased against a single announcer as in Canada many boxing shows had "The Colonel" Bob Sheridan as the lone voice calling the action. Ugh.

  20. Don Dunphy was awful. Put me to sleep. Still he was much better than every British commentator not named Ian Darke.

  21. Neil

    Neil tueur de grenouilles

Bernardo Osuna is the top play by play man currently

  22. cdogg187

    cdogg187 GLADYS

He actually reported what was happening instead of creating an alternate reality like that blind fuckboy Lampley

Cosell was horrible and great at the same time, lol

I liked Clancy because he sounded like my Uncle Joe

  25. All these other guys are jokers. Lampley, Tompkins and Darke know how to call fights. Clancy is decent though I agree with that. I'd replace tessitor in my list with him.

  26. Neil

    Neil tueur de grenouilles

    Gil cantsee

Good call on Tim Ryan, REED.

Tim Ryan was excellent. And yeah, had great chemistry with Clancy. That was a terrific duo.

  28. Irish

    Irish Yuge, Beautiful

Jimmy Magee and Dave "Boy" McCauley.

    These guys were brilliant......

Can't find too much of Magee on boxing but he had some classics during the Bernard Dunne fights.

Basically, he stops commenting on the actual fights and starts talking about something totally different and unrelated.

Here is what he said about Raushee Warren during the Americans Olympics in London, 2012. Warren is in the red with the yellow boots.

"One thing is for sure, if there is a black-out in London, you will find Warren with those boots. You might not find the rest of him".
