The best comedy ever is the Blues Brothers. Everything about the movie is perfect.

Take the Money and Run is Woody Allen's funniest movie when he was truly funny.

  5. Is this really considered a comedy? Even if it is classified as one I don't see it as one.

I dunno what else it would be considered. It's a sports comedy.

What would you view it as?

Yeah, maybe a "dramedy". It's not full of wacky hijinks, but there's lots of funny moments. It's a really good film either way.

I actually just listened to a podcast recently featuring David Duchovny. He said he tried out for the Woody part (he played basketball for the Princeton team). Said he was probably better off he didn't get it at the time. Myself, I can't picture anybody better then Woody playing that role.

Yeah, just because it's not wacky doesn't mean its not a comedy. Too many comedies are overly wacky and lack substance. WMCJ has a lot of substance, great acting/chemistry between Wesley/Woody, but at it's core, it's a comedy. A comedy with a message, as essentially the moral of the story is that a brotha and a white man with differing personalities/cultures can come together and become best friends.

Forget basketball, it's one of the best SPORTS movies of all time, and I don't think that can even be debated.

Woody has more acting ability in one his ball hairs than Duchovny's boring ass could ever have.

it's not a laugh-out-loud comedy, simple as. this thread is mostly about laugh-out-loud comedies, that's why anchorman, Austin powers, airplane, borat, nutty professor etc. are being posted

it's a comedy in the broader sense. if we were including those then we'd also be considering every rom-com or feel-good movie ever made

  12. I can see the irony in this thread now.
Xplosive picks The Great White Hype and White Men Can't Jump as favorite 'comedy' movies....

  14. I see it more as a drama with funny moments in it. Still, I suppose it can be considered a comedy when I think about it, I just never saw it that way.

    You've lost your damn mind.

It's the opposite - it's a comedy with SLIGHTLY dramatic moments.

Other than Woody having a gambling problem, and Rosie Perez always breaking up with him as a result, there's nothing else dramatic about the movie. And even THOSE moments aren't seriously dramatic.

    It's a comedy.

  16. I have no problem with you thinking its a comedy, but this post is ignorant. Classifying a film as a drama doesn't mean it has to be "dramatic". That's being too literal.

Definition of drama in the context of film is:

"Intended to be more serious than humour in tone, focusing on in depth development of realistic characters who must deal with realistic emotional struggles" - Wikipedia

Based on that definition in my opinion it's certainly more drama than it is comedy.

White Men Can't Jump is borderline comedy, but is more a fun MELODRAMA. So this falls into dramedy sub-division. It is like Star Wars: The Force Awakens: it has lots of jokes and is fun, but can't be considered a comedy.

I agree, it's more of a comedy with some dramatic elements.

Here's a pretty good long article on it.

I liked it and feel like a lot of the humor is for us boxing junkies. The interactions between Samuel L. Jackson and Cheech Marin are funnier if you know the whole Don King/Jose Suliaman history. I like the part when he says Conklin has been ranked in the top ten by the "incorruptible" Cheech Marin (whatever his character's name is) and it shifts to him making this embarrassed look.

Jamie Foxx was funny in it too.

"Don't hit me, you ain't my daddy....are you?"

  19. Yeah it's borderline. " dramedy" is the best classification. The intention of the film isn't to make us laugh at every turn, it has some deep character development and serious themes. Of course it has its light hearted elements too with the smack talk during the basketball games etc.

My favorite comedy is Swingers. Another comedy with some dramatic moments.

It's the best "single guy" movie IMO. Although I didn't really like watching it when I wasn't single because it made me miss being single.

    Other favorites:

    Dumb and Dumber
    Office Space
    Coming to America
    Happy Gilmore
    Airplane!

I also liked these dark comedies:

    The King of Comedy
    American Psycho
    Freeway

The definition falls flat on its ass in this case, because WMCJ is intended to be more humorous/fun than serious in tone.

You're the ONLY motherfucker I've ever heard in my life that would consider WMCJ to be more serious than humorous.

  30. Light hearted drama is the best description for that film. It's not a true comedy. Outside of the basketball court dissing scenes where was the humour? The rest of the dialogue and the themes were of a more serious nature no?
