1. Very subjective of course.

The film was ok but nuth'n special

Scarface, Taxi Driver, and The Usual Suspects are the three that immediately come to mind. All three are hailed as classics, but.... I just don't see it. At all.

Taxi Driver I find to be very UNDERWHELMING. Yes, can't degrade Deniro's performance. He did a damn fine acting job, but the movie itself is just meehhhhh, IMO.

Scarface is just too over-the-top and stupid to be a great movie. As far as Pacino crime movies go, Carlito's Way is 10 light years better than Scarface, despite being less heralded.

As for The Usual Suspects - great ending, but that's it. Other than the ending, it's a very forgettable movie. Same as Taxi Driver, it's not a knock on Spacey. He was excellent, just as Deniro was excellent in Taxi Driver. But the movie as a whole is mehhhhh. The Usual Suspects wasn't even the best Kevin Spacey movie of 95. Se7en was 10 miles better than Usual Suspects.

Anyway, all three of those IMO are highly overrated.

Speaking of overrated, the last TWO "Best Pictures" were crappy movies. Birdman won Best Picture and was a SHIT movie.

Spotlight wasn't a shit movie, but it was pretty mediocre in all honesty. HIGHLY HIGHLY forgettable movie.

So, add those two to the list.

This post probably looks like an attack on Michael Keaton, but it's not. I love Keaton as an actor. It's not his fault he's starred in two overrated movies in a row.

  5. Easy.
    The Shawshank Redemption.

If there was ever a movie that was influenced by the Internet and IMDB rating, it's that one.
Classic case of people following blindly 'because someone off the Internet says so'.

  6. Agreed on scarface and spotlight. Spotlight was particularly mediocre.

  7. Disagree with shawshank though. Very good film from start to finish

I love Scorsese & De Niro and Raging Bull isn't especially high on my list of their collaborations. It's normally a movie I would love with the talent involved, the subject being boxing, but I'm not huge on it. It's brilliantly acted and shot, but something about it is missing. I think it was cdogg who described it as "sluggish", and that I would agree.

    Overrated Best Picture winners:

    Shakespeare in Love
    Titanic
    Birdman

You better include Spotlight on that overrated best picture list.

I'd watch Titanic ANYDAY over Spotlight.

  13. Spotlight is incredibly unexciting. I supposed it only won because of the content. Nothing memorable about that film whatsoever.

  14. I liked Titanic though, thought it was well deserved of all its accolades

Most of the Best Picture winners from the last 20 years have been overrated. Worst one: does anyone remembers or for that matter, cared to watch The Artist?

I really like Scarface. I've seen it at least 6 or 7 times and I've always enjoyed it despite the ocassional foray into cheesiness. It's highly entertaining and has some thoughtfulness in it, I think it is worthy of the very high praise.

Not that it an acclaimed film or anything, but I cant stand always hearing how great the Big Lebowski is. It is OK, but mostly just weird, and in a try-hard way at that.

I think Scarface is shit, but to each his own. If you enjoy it, you enjoy it.

We can fully agree on The Big Lebowski. Saw it once. Have NO DESIRE WHATSOEVER to see it again.

  18. I've now added The Godafather to my list of overrated movies. Bit like Raging Bull as Sly said - people talk about these movies like they're brilliant pieces of art because cultlure tells them to. They have acquired a status that far outweights their artistic value

  19. You can't say that about Godfather though. That is a superb piece of art. Stellar plot, screenplay and acting. Flawless.

Both Scarface & the Big Lebowski are the poster children of overrated films. 'Scarface' had atrocious reviews when it first opened, but it became a cult film among the ghetto gangsta community which elevated it to 'cool' status. 'Lebowski' wasn't a critical darling either and it bomb miserably at the box office, but the white yuppies loved it and became the 'Napoleon Dynamite' (another overrated piece of shit film) of that population segment. With the advent of the internet all those films became 'respectable' mainly because their fans are writing reviews now.

  22. When I watched scarface all I remember seeing and hearing is "fuck fuck fuck coke shit fuck.... Joo wanna play rough? Ok. Say hello to my little friend...end credits".

You've gotta be fuckin kiddin me.

The Godfather is every bit the masterpiece it's hyped to be.

It's nothing like the overrated films that Raging Bull, Scarface, and Taxi Driver are.

fair point. there is a chicken and egg element to film reviews and this no doubt accounts for some of the high praise you now find for lebowski.

all i know is, every time i watch it, i laugh. and often, at parts that previously did not strike me as funny. to me, that is impressive when a movie can live on even after it's been watched over and over.

plus, i love how the movie makes fun of liberal idiocy.

  26. The Godfather and The Godfather Pt II - they’re not awful: there’s some decent acting by Robert Duvall and John Czale, but these performances in the first movie are eclipsed by the unfathomable, self-reverential, slovenly, baffling performance by Marlon Brando, the usual bag-of-tricks mugging by Robert De Niro, the
stone-faced, self-impressed faux-portentousness/eye-rolling volcanic eruptions of Al Pacino, the high-school-play-level, off-the-wall antics of James Caan.

In a lot of scsnes, it appears to be working way too hard to brood. It’s obvious that Francis Ford Coppola was trying to imbue the characters with weight and meaning by hiding them in the murkiness of poorly-lit rooms, hallways, and garages, but this attempt at “mood” fails, since the characters, a bunch of bumbling half-wits, don’t have the weight of character to make themselves worthy of our respect, or their own dignity.
As a result, their semi-concealment in the shadows does not lend them, or their actions, any gravitas.

The point I am trying to make is that I cannot comprehend how these films have achieved iconic status, which they clearly do not deserve. It’s all part of the “cultural instruction program,” which has also told us that Precious and Philadelphia were great films.

And you've been lied to, and fallen for it.
It's not all ya'll's fault you have gaps in your knowledge. :dunno:

  28. James Caans performance in Godfather is a tad overrated is give you that, but Brando and Pacino were perfect.

A very underrated performance in that film was that of the guy who played Virgil Sollozzo. One of the best villains ever on screen.
