Why is George Clooney an A-List star?

I was checking on boxofficemojo George Clooney's movie's grosses and this dude has more bombs than China & Russia combined. Sure, he has a few hits here and there (mostly esemble cast productions like the three 'Ocean's' films), and a couple of minor hits mainly because the films were so low budget there was no way it could lose money (except for 'Welcome to Collinwood' which worldwide made only $336,620...sort of a record among lowest grossing films ever). So how in the world this guy keeps getting starring roles? Yes, he keeps getting nominated for Academy Awards, but honestly I don't think he is nowhere near as good as those nominations might make you think. I believe he get accolades mainly for his political activism than anything else as he is one if not the most vocal actor concerning political causes this side of Jane Fonda.

BTW he has a new movie opening this weekend, Money Monster which even with its low budget I am sure will end up either losing money or barely recouping the investment. So why Hollywood keeps giving starring roles to this dude? :dunno:

Ehhhhh, I wouldn't call Clooney an A-List star. Not at all.

An A-List star is Leo, or prime versions of Jack and Brando.

Clooney's never been on THAT type of level of stardom.

    He's a B-list star IMO.

Nah...Clooney certainly is A-List...and I agree with Panchy, I don't know why. He's one of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood and one of the biggest stars....isn't that how you define A list?

Well, the why is simple.... women love him and have always loved him.

    I guess he's borderline A-List, but not undeniably A-List.

Not a star like Jack in his prime, or Brando in his prime, or even action guys like Stalone and Arnold in the 80s.

Maybe this should be another topic, but don't feel like starting another thread....

Who are the top five A List stars in Hollywood who you say?

Robert Downey Jr is king of the hill right now after he pocketed $50 million to play Iron-Man in Ultron plus $40 million for his 'supporting role' in 'Civil War'.

Tom Cruise gets paid an obscene amount of money for those M.I. films plus a cut from the profits.

Denzel Washington gets paid $20 million per film

Angelina Jolie also get a huge salary (reportedly $20 million for the 'Salt' sequel).

Dwayne Johnson is almost sure money in the bank on any film he is in, so he is top choice for the studios.

While I do agree with all you say, Clooney is yet considered A-List even though most of his films end up losing money. Look at this: last year he starred in one of the biggest box office bombs of 2015, 'Tomorrowland', which he followed by another bomb 'Hail Caesar!' yet he was still able to land a juicy deal for those coffee commercials with Danny DeVito for a cool $40 million! His name & face bring instant recognition. I get that. But for the life of me, why he keeps getting starring roles when other famous actors after one or two bombs struggle to even get a job in supporting roles!

Don't know why Clooney keeps getting staring roles because he has been bombing a lot. How much is he getting per film? I know he does a lot of low budget and independent films so maybe he's not asking for A-lister paydays and also these low budget and independent films need a name actor which he provides.

Clooney is a horrible actor... His success is baffling to me... Lots of guys are handsome but they aren't all famous actors... I don't get how this dude has been so successful... You can't have that much pull just from being Rosemary Clooney's nephew

In fairness to Clooney, he does have a certain charisma to him. He's not a HORRIBLE actor. That's being too harsh. He's decent, but I wouldn't say more than decent.

I don't know how much he gets per film, but he is among the top most richest actors right now with a net worth of $250 million which is way more than other more successful actors like Brat Pitt, Matt Damon or Sandra Bullock.

Yeah, Cdogg went to far. Clooney is super charismatic and not a bad actor at all and I like him as a leading man in a lot of his films. Hell, he even talks cool. I don't get why his movies are bombing so much lately other than he seems to pick films that have messages rather than trying to line himself up with what will be a success, and in that instance he deserves to be praised rather than criticized.

For me, Tom Cruise is the biggest star. He's the one actor that if I see a new film coming out and he's the star, I'm interested in seeing it . Not saying he's the best actor, just that his films tend to be good.

I don't watch George Clooney films.

I liked Clooney when he was on E.R. but not as a movie star. Heck the only film that he has starred that I watched at the movies was 'Out of Sight' and that was mainly because I wanted to peek at Jennifer Lopez ass!

He's a great "movie star" though. The man does most of his own stunts and is committed to the action. Samuel L Jackson is a great Movie Star also.

Tom Cruise movies are funny. You can't help but laugh watching a 5'2" guy be a tough guy and kick everybody's ass in them.

And fuck Tom Cruise anyway. I was staying at the Place D'armes in New Orleans back in November, and I wanted to walk over and have a drink at Pirate's Alley, which is this little hole in the wall bar that's just a short walk away if you cut through Jackson Square, but Tom Cruise was filming a scene for some Jack Reacharound movie in the Square so it was blocked off and I had to walk all the way around the block.

Fuck him for slightly inconveniencing me.

I agree with RWTP it's trendy to hate on Cruise.

If Cruise were such a bad actor he wouldn't be so successful and his films would suck. He's no marlon Brando obviously, but he's good at what he does and his characters are believable.

And IMO his films are incredibly rewatchable.
