What fights ( preferably championship fights) were considered 50-50 ( or close to it) going in but turned out to be mismatches ?

Was Lewis-Golota a 50-50 fight because I remember a ton of experts picking Golota

I'm not sure if it was a 50-50 but a fair amount of people picked Hatton. Even for those who predicted Pacquiao very few thought it would a two round massacre.

I don't know what the odds were at the time but i would think Sanchez-Gomez would have been considered very close.

Hopkins-Tito was pretty even odds. Actually Tito was the slight favourite. Should have been 42:1 based on the way it turned out

That's madness if true. Hopkins was a dominant Middleweight champion and Trinidad was only in his second fight at Middleweight. No respect was given to a great champion.

Trinidad had the "names" on his record though, which is why I've always said people should use their fuckin eyes rather than Boxrec.

Hopkins age also had something to do with that. He was 36 and Trinidad was 28.

He wasn't a great champion at that point. He was a guy who had made a lot of defenses, but had a couple of close calls vs pretty average opposition. The Holmes win was very solid, but Tito is the win that put Hopkins in a different level historically.

While I agree, that's a fight where it doesn't apply, ironically. Tito was a wrecking machine; Hopkins a negative grinder who tended to get the better of guys, but not outclass them.

I was stationed in Japan at the time and watching ESPN for udpates. ESPN actually announced that Golota had knocked out Lewis in the first round. They came back five minutes later and corrected it.

As I recall, both the Akinwande and Golota fights were 7/5 Lewis, so basically even.

I was at a PPV fight party for Hopkins/Tito with a bunch of casual boxing fans, and there were a number of people there exclaiming what a huge, huge upset it was, like they had just watched Tyson/Douglass all over again. I could only smirk and try not to come off as a know it all asshole.

I watched Hopkins/Trinidad with a buddy of mine and his family at his apartment... It was my friend's "Jack and Jill" party (one of those things where they combine a stag and a shower) ... We were actually anxious for the Jack and Jill to end so we could get back and watch the fight... We both thought Hopkins would win but he thought Hopkins was going to do a Hagler and come out and start WWIII but I kept saying no, he's gonna turn him, jab him, do a little like De La Hoya did except he won't deviate from the job... Naturally, all the others were casuals and they'd heard of Trinidad and knew little of Hopkins and they were all predicting a massive Tito KO... Unlike Nobleart, I made a point to be a know-it-all asshole:lol:

My friend was worried he was showing Trinidad too much respect early on but I kept saying "no, it's perfect... this is exactly what he needs to do, he'll slowly turn the heat up... he's got it in the bag" ... I was a big Hopkins fan back then so I was loving it, seeing this overlooked technician finally get the spotlight... When he knocked him out in the 12th, we were cheering like "YES! YES! He fucking DID it"

the neighborhood was very QUIET that night... Quite a contrast with the LOUD celebrations by neighborhood Boricuas after Trinidad was given his gift over Hoya

Lacy - Calzaghe is the correct answer. Much as it will hurt the jarrercize hatred club round these parts.
