"PHYSICAL TALENTS" are the use that the individual makes of their PHYSICAL attributes.

For some reason, we are hardwired to assume, perhaps because of the nature of the sport, that long arms is a physical attribute.

If a guy like Hearns had always gotten sucked in and destroyed on the inside, we would argue that he never made use of his physical talents.

Yet, Bowe was always safer and more dangerous on the inside.

Hearns was always more dangerous on the outside....despite hurting Hagler worst on the inside.

Corralles likewise used his "Physical talents" on the inside. A long arm is dangerous if you can find room to use it.

It is to the non boxer who always sees safety as being further away from the danger.

Some guys, not always short guys, are safest closer to the pocket.

Marciano had short arms but was rarely picked off on the outside.

When Walcott dropped him, it was up close.

When he KO'd Walcott, it was Marciano who was on the outside, stepping in.

If Walcott had thrown that left with Rocky on his chest, it is doubtful that Marciano would have even been able to throw that shot, much less KO his man.

There are at least two things to consider when considering a punch, there is the need to be in range to land it, and simultaneously having enough room to fully extend the arm to get the maximum snap or leverage.

Some guys, like Vitali, were so heavy-handed and injury prone, that they never bothered with extending the arm fully....thus "Negating" their "Advantage".

But to them, the arm-length was only a defensive feature, not an offensive feature. Ditto height.

Some long armed guys are dangerous up close....more dangerous than when far away.

Height not much of an advantage. There is a reason You dont often see bean pole dominates in boxing, at least not as often as well proportionated guys. Arm length is a bit more of an advantage, but even then, it is not an important one, and can also hinder certain fighting styles. Irish is right on this. Thinking that being tall is such an advantage is based on the false premise that you are safer on the outside than on the inside. Which is not necessarly the case.

A long fighter will not have the same style as a stocky one, but it is ignorant to think that the former has an advantage over the latter.

Vito Antuofermo: Not an ATG but he is an example of a man who had physical attributes which are immediately identifiable as being definitely disadvantageous.

I think that's the way to look at this.

Find guys who were physically composed in such a fashion as was DIS advantageous to boxing.

Then see if any of them come even close to ATG status.

Antuofermo and Troy Dorsey, for example. VA had a club foot. I mean....the guy had ONE.GOOD. FOOT. And he cut for fun.

ANd yet, he got a " Draw " with Hagler. Beat Moyer. Beat Griffith. Beat Briscoe.

Granted, Moyer and Griffith were finished, but again, for a guy with one good foot... :dunno:

Hatton was a very good fighter. Quick hands and very fast feet. He was definitively more talented than Antuofermo, though he hasd less intangibles. I picked him to beat tszyu at the time, even though i hated him

We seem to have more and more of these weird unanswerable ontological thread questions at fightbeat these days. I cant even set a criteria for setting a criteria for answering this! Pass

That's because they are stupid questions if the parameters aren't set and the parameters are never set.

Setting my own parameters and ignoring the part about ATG status, 'physically least talented' probably means hand speed in this context. Foreman.2 and Carlos Maussa both won world championships with hand speed way below average. I can't think of a guy with slow hands and no power, but that would be even better.
