Nobleart and Xplosive def know their stuff. Xplosive underrated faciltiators and greatly overrates scorers but at least theres some belief that he follows the game he brazenly talks about. Most of the other posts have been cringeworthy.... Criticizing a point guard for not crashing the offensive glass is probably the worst
excuse phonetap if he is wrong but he didn't see criticism of Curry for not offensively crashing the boards. phonetap's interpretation was a critique of Curry starting his slow trot the other way after shots go up. when you or your teammates are taking shots and you're making zero attempt to hold a position, in case of a long rebound, that's a legitimate critique. again, phonetap apologizes if he didn't interpret this correctly.
Precisely. I mean you want to take a shot and look at it, fine. Lebron does that all the time. But when you start walking back, before the shot even hits the rim or before you teammates shot hits the rim, it's not quite the example one should set. Especially for many kids that look up to him. I mean it's happening now. I play all the time and am seeing this shit every where. And 80% of these shots are missing, but they all think they are curry and shit.
It's because 90 percent of the time getting back in transition is far more important than "holding a position' whatever the hell that means.
Im sure you have anything even remotely concrete proving a case for Curry's defense being so "infamous" Again player reputation based on ESPN and TNT media isnt a good look. I remember this community calling Westbrook an "elite defender" for years based on some completely bogus reputation hypothesized from sheer athletic ability the media never let go of. He sucks defensively, hes worse than Curry by far.
I know steals is not the best indicator for defensive ability, but I have a hard time imagining the guy who led the league in steals being a below average defender.
you are fooling no one but yourself with this statement, curry isn't trotting back because there is an imminent need to protect the basket from a fast break, he is doing it showboating because he assumes the shot he (or Thompson) took is going in. "Holding a position, whatever the hell that means". This statement right here means you have never been coached or even played organized ball in your entire life. phonetap won't waste his time discussing fundamental basketball concepts with someone who is not only uninformed but who doesn't care to be. Carry on dude...
curry's steals come from weak side help, reach ins, and protecting passing lanes. He is a good team defender not so much man to man. why do you think Russ and KD laughed when asked the question and Kyrie attacks every single time Curry is matched up against him? granted nobody is stopping those guys man to man but curry is a marginally average man to man defender AT BEST.
Barnes. Younger and has more value as a hypothetical number 2 because he spaces the floor and defends 3 positions. Demar doesnt space the floor at all and defends zero but he is a more proven scorer. We dont know how well Barnes can score if he has his touches increases.
I don't need to play the game. I study it at the highest level it is played. I have people do that other shit for me. IE: Top tier elite basketball minds and professional coaches and not fucking rec league heroes who think they know shit because they coached a middle school AAU team once. Fuck outta here.
It's not. Its actually objectively above average. One on one defense means absolutely zero for point guards. The things that actually matter, how disruptive a PG is, how well he guards pick and roll, how well he contests shots on the perimeter, active hands to help on bigs and swipe the ball away (Curry is one of the best in the league at this) ....etc....this is what actually equates to good point guard defense. Keeping his man in front of him is like lowest on the totem pole and if it's actually a repeated problem they can simply do as most do and switch the matchup. Paul has been the leagues leading defender at point guard for years now, he's no Payton/Kidd but he gets it done in the modern game by being disruptive and not dying on screens. Point guards are nearly never top tier isolation defenders because they are small, and the most important aspect for defense is height and length. On the other hand MCW is a legitimate defensive stud, and he sucks. Because offense puts point guards on the court not defense. You just cant be a defensive liability to the point that other teams can basically score on you at will like the likes of Lillard/Irving and a few others ..(Barea, Rose, etc)
It's not that serious, no need to get touchy because you don't understand fundamental basketball. and you don't deal with top tier elite basketball minds and professional coaches so stop.
Pretty much anything you want to use. 638 did a stunningly accurate projection model and they showed the Cavs win margin with/without Irving is basically nonexistent. I think he made a 4 game difference overall. LeBron is the whole show there, Kyrie is just a slightly relevant bit player. And for the record, Irving is correctly given more leeway due to being 24 years old. Based on potential, hes way better than this season showed. The hope is his peak is basically him sustaining his 14-15 season and playing closer to league average defense for his position.
Good thing theres this modern contraption called the internet. If theres a single aspect of the game I wanted to learn I could instantly learn it...from an extremely highly credentialed and esteemed basketball mind, not, again some guy who "coaches" 9 year olds at the local park. Never once have I heard any esteemed basketball mind refer to "holding a position" on an outside shot for long rebounds, and in particular using it as a criticism for any guard. Unless you are referring to holding a shooting motion in that case what the fuck kind of moron questions the routine of an all time great shooter.
so while you assholes were busy playing the game and talking among yourselves, Silent night has been exchanging ideas with Hubie Brown, Bob Myers and Tom Izzo at the Secret Elite Hoop Mind Summit email group. bow down biches
I asked who are the top tier minds YOU work with. BTW, warriors were favored to win while curry was out too.
This is a perfect example of a "know it all" who doesn't know the basics of basketball. phonetap doesn't coach 9 year olds so he doesn't understand why you keep bringing that up. AND even if he did, why is it a discredit to every AAU coach across the nation? Since when is coaching, mentoring and guiding children off the streets (in many inner city cases) a bad thing to be looked down upon? You have an elitist complex and you don't even know what you are talking about. You say Steph Curry is playing transition defense as he turns his back to the basket as shots go up? For someone who "supposedly" associates with elite basketball minds, find one that coaches this behavior. By definition transition defense begins when a shot is missed or made. In laymens terms transition defense begins when you are on defense NOT when a shot is in the air. If this confuses you, phonetap will educate you further. Also, since the Internet is your key learning tool, key in "offensive rebounding position" and educate you self away since you are the ONE and ONLY person on this forum who did not and does not understand what phonetap meant with his original point.
Example # 3,080 of How LITTLE You Actually KNOW about Basketball... An Elite Level ON BALL Defender will ALWAYS Be Coveted, On ANY Level of Basketball, Especially in the NBA...How Else Do you Think Players like Tony Allen and Patrick Beverley STAY in the League???...It Damn Sure AIN'T Because of their Proficiency at Getting Buckets...Marcus Smart is Similar, Only he's Able to Score a BIT More than Allen and Beverley... Steph Curry's LACK of On Ball Defensive Ability is THE Reason Kyrie Irving is TORCHING Him This Series... In the Cases of Allen, Beverley and Smart, if they AREN'T Able to Contain Their Man, Guess What? The Coach Damn Sure AIN'T "Switching the Matchup", Which is What You've Indicated Happens...If You LACK the Fucking Personnel to Do that, HOW EXACTLY Are you Going to Switch???...And Even if 1 of the Aforementioned is Getting Lit Up, They'll Do a BETTER Job than Any Replacement Would By "Switching the Matchup"... The COOLEST Part About Having You Around is You Don't Even Know WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW...You're Completely OBLIVIOUS to Very Basic, Tried and True Principles and Philosophies Regarding Basketball... "One on One Defense Means ZERO for Point Guards"...So What You're Saying is, You DON'T Need to Place a Good On Ball Defender on THE ONE Person Who Has the Ball the Majority of the Time for the Other Team???....In the Frequent Instances where the Point Guard is Also Among THE Best Offensive Players on his Squad, that Shit is SUICIDE, Homey... But by All Means, Continue THINKING Your Stat Reliance Ass Looks Smart... REED:hammert:
It's Called "Holding Your Follow Through", for Starters... Clearly Steph DOESN'T Hold His Follow Through Because he's SHOWBOATING (Which REED Actually Likes), but YOU Thought he Did it to Get Back on Defense...Another Gem... Like Tony was Alluding to, it's Actually BAD for Players to Mimic This, but REED Also Sees this ALL The Time...Steph was BORN w/Elite Level Shooting Ability AND he's Put in the Time to HONE his Shooting Craft; To Take it To a MUCH Higher Level than his Dad Could...Steph's Literally THE Only Player in History that Can CONSISTENTLY Get Away w/NOT Holding his Follow Through...But Basketball is a Copy Cat Sport, So Now EVERYBODY Wants to Wear Number 30, Launch 3's from Damn Near Halfcourt AND Eschew Holding their Follow Through... But Best Believe, If/When a Shooting Slump Arises, Steph's Approach Will Revert to Being More FUNDAMENTAL... REED:hammert:
Which is Bad Enough, but this Clown COMPOUNDS His Idiocy by Not Even WATCHING the Game... He Simply Looks @ Stats After the Fact... REED:hammert:
Pfftt!!!! post this on Reddit/NBA see what happens. Clearly you haven't been taught by the top tier minds in the Sport.
