Yes every NBA front office uses analytics and bases decisions long term on them rather than the "eyeball test" of a 2 game sample. I don't think Barnes is worth the max by the way. But the idea is that he hasn't exactly peaked yet and some team with little to lose might offer him a prospective deal just to see if they can hit a homerun
Barkley finished on one top 10 defensive team in his entire career. Every single team he played for inevitably got much worse defensively. The Fo Fo Fo(Fi) team that crushed the NBA didn't do it with offense, they were just good on offense, they were a dominating defensive team whos defensive culture collapsed as soon as Dr J and co passed the torch to Barkley. Fuck Barkley. He even made jokes about how he wouldnt try on defense and has zero rings to show for it.
