HBO's WESTWORLD

Somehow the HBO series reboot is attracting a lot of recognizable names. Besides J.J. Abrams & Bryan burke producing, the following actors have signed to have recurring roles in this series: Anthony Hopkins as the amusement park inventor, Evan Rachel Woods as a casual park visitor caught up in the middle of the turmoil, James Mardsen as her love interest, Jeffrey Wright & Shannon Woodward as park employees, Miranda Otto as head of the park's quality assurance department, Rodrigo Santoro as 'Harlan Bell' described as 'the HBO version of Yul Brynner's cyborg antagonist', Thandie Newton as a 'beautiful woman with a genius for reading people and a knack for survival'. And who gets the role made famous by Yul Brynner, the unstoppable villain cyborg 'Man in Black'? None other than Ed Harris! All this talent got attracted by series screenplay written by Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher Nolan who also co-wrote four of his films, including interstellar) which has been described as 'brilliant'. I have to admit I wasn't hyped about this remake/reboot, but now I am.

That movie was awesome.

 

To be honest I liked the sequel, Futureworld, more than Westworld. Peter Fonda was good in that one, plus it had a bigger scope than the first one. That said, Westworld has influenced many scifi movies like Terminator (the almost unstoppable robot chasing the human targeted for termination) and Jurassic Park (all hell breaking loose in brand new attraction park). But hope this new series is better than that awful, boring, lame short lived 1980 tv series Beyond Westworld

 

Now I know you're saying this to wind people up. ::

Futureworld was universally derided on release...by everyone, hasn't aged at all well, the acting is shite, the ideas are so fucking piss-poor...the entire movie has been forgotten about and for good reason.

Futureworld failed on every level that Westworld succeeded on.


It's like saying Jaws 2 was better than Jaws.

 

I watched both back-to-back in a double bill feature on 1976 and while I liked WestWorld at that time I found Futureworld more interesting. I haven't watch either one since then, but yeah, Futureworld has dated bad. Maybe if I watched it again as an adult my opinion can change. But hey, I like Beneath The Planet of The Apes more than the first one no matter what everybody says about it.

I bet you....that this is going to start off really interesting, then gradually veer off into total confusing stupidity and soap-operaesque like Lost and every other shitty HBO series since.

Game Of Thrones I watched the first-ever 3 episodes and decided it was ´Dragons & Tits Soap´ for nerds and women.

I wasn´t wrong and havent watched an episode since....

 

I first remember watching this as a kid back in the 1970s and really liked it.
But when you look at it now, sure, its held-up better than people say (even the actors in it dont rate it)....but better than Planet Of The Apes itself? :scratcher:

 

I didn't said is better; just that I like it more.

Anyway, the thing is with Westworld, it doesn´t grab you immediately with the first episode....which is the same effect I got when watching first series of The Wire....
It has the potential to become one of the greatest TV shows ever made for the simple fact the story can go anywhere.

Plus its got a good cast, plus its got JJ Abrams involved, plus it has input from Michael Crichton who wrote the original.

 

They need to write out that preening cunt who's in charge of the storylines. If there's one actor who doesn't fit in with the rest of the cast, it's that asshole.

 

Oh, and Ed Harris is the fucking man. Gotta be one of the most over-looked solid actors in history.
