It annoys me that people always credit Bootsy Collins for the bass line even though it was written by Herbie Hancock.

Wee witty art pop vignettes of the woodchip wallpapered mundanity of UK working class life - seemed the smartest guitar band of the 90s to make the charts to me. Mibbes it doesn't translate to you poncey saaaathaners with your gold paved streets and butlers!

I don't like most of their songs I've heard. But one song I love from them is "A Little Soul." Sad message in that song. And having the band members' kids in the video made it more touching.

If slice can name me 5 better/smarter guitar songs of the last 25 years to make the top 10 than common people & babies I'll eat my hat.

I could name 5x as many.

Pulp just somehow rode in on the ´surf´ of some shit called ´Brits-Pop´ or whatever....only it was more like really shitty, algae-based spume.

Better/smarter top 10 hits by guitar bands in the last 25 years. You're gonna struggle.

franz ferdinand had a couple of crackers. Regret by new order... if you consider them a guitar band. do primal scream make the time cut off? 'Yes' by macalmont and butler was a chonking tune if that made the top 10. Design for life. I don't think belle and sebastian ever got near the top 10. By the time you leave the 90s theres a pretty big decoupling between the top 10 and anything half way decent. I say Mgmt would warrant mention...if they were a guitar band! I never liked Artic monkeys but they're worth mentioning. Kasabian? Not for me but I'm reaching here. Among big bands I don't think the yeah yeah yeahs, arcade fire, strokes, foals etc made the singles charts.

common people was total, biting genius and it was one of the top selling singles of the year beside cotton eye joe, waterfalls by tlc, celine dion! Pretty unique

Oh hang on. That´s from 1990 onwards?

    Fuck that noise.

Most of what came our of the 1990s and beyond is shit anyway, guitar-based or not.

    Name them!

Clever? Well I dunno - you should know it when you see it. for instance Common people had a sociological point, it was witty, it made sharp observations, there's was a well defined aesthetic along with it - clever ...whereas parklife, for instance, was just a posh boy listing off a bunch of cockney slang phrases in affected Estuary English about imaginery people in a park. No point, no wit, no clever observations, just glib, fatuous shit. Just as an example :)

'Common People' is no more "clever" and "observational" than 'Girls and Boys' (and I hate both songs, to be fair).

It is. Arguably the best pop music commentary on class in the UK ever and managed to be funny too. I must've met two dozen people that could have been that girl from St. Martin's college. 'Oh my friends back home all think I'm positively bonkers coming to glasgow to study art! I went over to the east end today take some pictures Hahahahaha! I just love how real people are there, ya'. Living in derelict victorian mansion tenenents with no fridge which get rented to waves of upper class english students in perpetuity all of whom think it's glamorous to have no working lock on your front door. Hell let's face it, it's not too far off describing Damon.

Anyhoooo.... I think it's a good pop song. When someone puts it on the jukebox or the radio I make enjoyment to it

It wasn't Damon who was actually talking in that song. It was an English actor. I forget his name but he played "Mark", Tim Roth's annoying brother in the classic "Meantime."
