Love the fat black american woman wombling across the zebra crossing as if nothing odd is happening as he blasts celtic symphony at her through loud speakers

    "Wombling" :lol: :lol:

I always liked "Pitching and Rolling Like A Stricken Ship in Heavy Seas" but, in the interests of brevity, and with no loss of levity, Wombling will do just fine.

Steely Dan's musical background is based in bebop, Dylan, Tin Pan Alley and Ellington

None of those things are "California" at all, not even remotely

Nothing by Boston should be on a "Greatest" anything list unless it's the "Greatest Cliched Arena Faggotry" list

Aye, agreed. Still though, it's a good song. Not great but I wouldn't change the station if it came on the radio.

No. That song reminds me of being in a lowlife, smoky pool hall.

    Maybe not a million...but yeah.

The Clash were always very much ´The Emperor´s New Clothes Of Music´ - adored by critics and even moreso today when in fact, looking back at their output, it was very hit & miss.

Good point - unlike steely dan, the clash often did have awesome new clothes. They also visited a barber frequently and didn't stink of damp hemp!

Boston's first album is an all time classic, but honestly not something I'd probably listen to these days.

I liked the Cars. Well, I enjoyed their singles, not enough to go out and buy the albums. RIP to Benjamin Orr, the bassist and lead singer on quite a few hits (though Ric Ocaseck sang on most of the hits.) Cancer is a mofo.

Ocaseck gave an interview when they did a reunion a few years back and he really gave it up to the keyboard player. he said they always wrote the songs for guitar, drum, and bass. The keyboard player would hear the completed song and fill in whatever he felt was missing from the melody and that's what usually gave the Cars their sound. Or as R.O. put it "he always gave the fans somwthing to take away from each song."

Ahhhh, as overrated as it is (those heady days of TV-adverts-with-pop-songs) it´s not bad.
If you like Mitch Ryder´s ´Little Latin Lupe Lu´...you´ll probably like it.

Any band that brings class politics and brando and ginsberg and reggae/hip hop (in an era of race riots) into the pop charts and a generation of working class kids bedrooms is a good band. aesthetic, cultural, political allusions/imagery/references were as much part of the gestalt as guitars. an embiggening cultural episode! if you don't like them that's you're privilege but you're WRANG and possibly a great big POOFTER-person

Possibly, but then The Clash always took life too seriously and ultimately got their music and their politricks all messed up.
When it came down to it, they chased the dollar just like everyone else, e.g. US Festival ´83 (where ironically, they were humbled badly by Roth and Van Halen that they soon died a death after)

If you saw "The Rise and fall of the Clash" (Great Documentary and very sad) you'll see they were badly deceived by their manager. He convinced them to ditch Mick Jones and then he eventually tried to join the band himself. When Strummer realized he had been had by their manager he flew to where Mick Jones was on holiday and with tears in his eyes began knocking on doors at random to try to reconcile and get Mick Jones back in the band. It was too late. He was already recording with Big Audio Dynamite.

Away to see van morisson tonight at kelvingrove park; my dad bought a ticket for my auntie and she couldn't make it. I'm so knackered tonight I'd sooner go straight to my scratcher but I'm sure it'll be pretty good

I was supposed to see UB40 tonight but I never got the tickets and now I just don't want to drive across town when I can hear them on the jukebox at my local.

Aye, it was good right enough. I much prefer the early/astral weeks stuff to some of the more stereotypical bluesy stuff but I enjoyed it all as a show. I loved his exit- he just said 'give a hand to the band, please' half way through Gloria (first time he'd said more than two words all night) then just walked across the stage, opened an old wooden door on the victorian bandstand, and closed it behind him as the band continued jamming. The crowd thought it was just an interlude before the encore and kept clapping and singing 'Gloria!!!'. I knew something was up. I looked to the side of the stage and, through a hedge, saw the break lights of a 4x4 pulling away onto kelvin way while the roads were clear  the crowd kept clapping along waiting for the encore. By the time all the various guitar solos and drum solos and organ solos were over van was on the m8 heading to the airport. total pro.

Is there anything worse than 'sassy' middle aged, middle class women dancing to bluesy music btw? Fuck me if it isn't the pits of the world, there were a few I wished I could leave bobbing in the kelvin like ophelia
