At 147lb, Welterweight: Trinidad circa 1999 v Mayweather circa 2012

From my older MM thread of Whitaker v Mayweather Jr (which was a unanimous Whitaker victory, I might add) and as Trinidad smashed Sweet Pea in reality and generally had a good time against chicke....er, I mean runners, how does this one play out?

Pound 4 pound Floyd is better, no doubt. But is he a better 147 pounder??

Tito may have been overrated in his prime, but many have forgotten how good he was in his own day. His height and reach, long jab, underrated hand speed, and yes POWER, would give Floyd all kinds of problems. More problems than the likes of old washed up De La Hoya gave him. More problems than Maidana and to a lesser degree, Cotto gave him.

Floyd would have to stick and move for 12 rounds here. But he's gonna get hit. And when he does, how does he handle it?

I think he has to trade with Trinidad and hope 3-5 shots can keep Trinidad´s big shots at bay.

I don't think Floyd had the pure foot speed or range to keep Tito at bay and I don't think the shoulder roll is going to work well against a heavy, accurate combo puncher like Tito.

Tito was no defensive wizard but he wasn't that easy to potshot once he got warmed up and he was a dangerous counter puncher.

I know some will mention Oscar, but DLH had not just the hand and foot speed, but he had enough power to keep Tito from just coming in. Oscar also took plenty good, meaty shots from Trinidad and his great chin held up. I don't think Floyd's jaw is made of glass or anything, but I'm not convinced he would hold up well from Trinidad's assault.

Tbh....gotta go with floyd, the gulf in skill, versatility and ring smarts is wider than the sky. Obviously Tito has a very live punchers chance

    THIS

Floyd would out box Trinidad with a 'safety-first' tactic for 12 rounds, but Tito had a puncher's chance to turn the tide if he could hit him clean. A Trinidad left hook to the body could end the fight any moment.

I'm not sure what floyds make believe versatility at welter is going to do for him against Trinidad.

Pound for pound what you're saying makes sense though.

Let's be honest- there isn't a welter Tito (legitimately) beat who would have a prayer vs floyd

There's not a welter that Floyd fought that doesn't get holes punched in them by Felix Trinidad. Judah, Guerrero, Cotto, Maidana, Canelo, etc don't go the distance with Tito, more likely than not. It speaks to how jaded you are about "Money May" that you would even bring up who beats who's opponents.

    I'm what about who now?

The point is just that Tito being 'much better' and winning 'easily' is based on....oba Carr, hector Camacho, yori boy campas and a whole lot of not much

You may not claim to be a fan but you clearly rate him about as highly as a welter as you do a lightweight. He probably won your begrudged respect when he beat up your boy Hatton, who was never very good. Lol

Floyd being an all-time welter that's going to beat other great welters on pure pedigree is based on... Judah, Baldomir, Hatton, Guerrero, Cotto and Maidana. I think you're still stuck in these guys being considered good "at the time" and missing the bigger picture which should be easy to see if you imagine them in the ring with Trinidad. Carr, Campos, Barnes etc were considered good opponents "at the time" as well and that was a strong welter era.

Good benchmarks would be how well a coked-up, shot Pernell Whitaker and prime De la Hoya did against Trinidad:
    * Whitaker was 36, way past his prime and showed aggression against a P4P puncher....and still managed to last the distance with a busted jaw
    * De la Hoya clearly out-boxed a P4P puncher for 2/3 of the fight in a highly contested fight

Mayweather Jr isnt quite the guy Whitaker was in his prime but clearly a better boxer and mover than De la Hoya....at any weight.

I think Mayweather Jr just wins this encounter: too accurate, too fast, too smart....so I concur with Hut*Hut

Robert Guerrero is a former Jr. Lightweight who almost got ktfo and won a gift over Aaron Martinez and his best win is Andre Berto. The highlight of Ortiz career is going 1-1 with Andre Berto and he was knocked out by Josesito Lopez and Collazo. Bertos best win is Collazo... Barnes best wins were Glenwood Brown and Harold Brazier. I'm not seeing the levels...

You're giving undue significance to these average ass guys Floyd was fighting because you remember watching it (and watching 24/7 or whatever it was called) knowing who they were and being unsure of the result where as Tito knocking out his opponents is something that already happened.

If Brown and Brazier were nobody then who did Ortiz and Guerrero beat? Berto, Jan Spielberg and Japanese Krazyguy?

The chances of floyd willingly engaging with Tito are basically nil

He was never a stick and move guy at 147 for the most part.

He was mostly flat footed and in the pocket, able to dominate smaller guys with his strength.

Floyd is ABSURDLY overrated as a welterweight. ABSURDLY. Above 140, he was not exceptional.

This is a guy who was given Hell by Cotto above 140, yet shuts out Trinidad?

    Please.

I think Trinidad beats the shit outta Floyd at 147.

Trinidad always struggled against movers, boxers, smart guys....Whitaker, De la Hoya, Hopkins, Wright...

He didn't struggle with P at all. DLH had the height, range, power and foot speed that Floyd didn't have at 147. Hopkins was a natural middle whereas Floyd is a natural lightweight. Trinidad was clearly past prime against Wright.

trinidad's height and length alone would set him apart from all of the opponents pbf faced.

crazy how pbf faced one stubby guy after another.
