Tinker is an anglisation portmanteau of two words

"Tin" as in the metallic element and "Ceard" {pr. Keh-Yard} which is the Gaelic word for "trade" or "profession".

So basically a "Tinker" is a tinsmith or metal worker of some description.

It derives from an era when Tinkers would go around repairing pots and pans.

They would this by chewing up a piece of paper or cloth to "Dam" the hole, then pour in the molten pot metal until it set in the hole.

Then the "Dam" would be removed and the two sides sanded down to finish the job.

Hence the expression "Not worth a tinkers dam" i.e. not worth the bit of chewed up cloth or paper used to block the hole during its repair, ie worthless.

 

I like how some don't mind calling him a fucking tinker, yet would be the first to scream outrage if someone said fucking nagger or wetback. Double standard at its finest

Edit: Just checked a bit on the subject, and the most recent genetic studies say that while it seems that the romani origin is probably not true (or very marginal) and that they are indigenous irish , they have splitted genetically from the mainstream Irish a thousand years ago, and they now are a distinct ethnic group. Culturally and linguistically studies on the other hand, points toward a romani influence.

Totally agree. I particular notice this about Asians, routinely have discrimination shown against here, often by our most "pc" members (looking for an 'outlet' perhaps?), because, well, it just seems to be accepted.
