Top 5 Chins of alltime PFP

Discussion in 'General Boxing Discussion' started by Rich ´Money´ Mustard, Oct 6, 2016.

  1. Pretty straight forward, (although defense and conditioning can be a factor)

Rank, in your opinion, the top 5 best chins the sport has ever seen.

It is difficult to define. If a fighter never goes down, how can we define his chin?

Since it is hard to say who has the best chin, I give you my top 25-29 all the time

    29 Evander Holyfield
    28 Lou Ambers
    27 James Toney
    26 Mike McCallum
    25 Erik Morales

That's a weird argument. It would be like saying that we really don't know if Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world, since he didn't race against everyone. To be ranked among the best chin ever, you have to proved it, which means taking some bombs and not be affected by them.

I'd argue against putting Chuvalo there. Yeah he was never down, but he was almost out on his feet a few times (though after receiving terrible beating. Probably wuld put Tua in there. Was never really affected by a punch during his prime, even if he fought some huge punchers (Lewis (even if he fought like a bitch), Ibeabuchi).

Hagler definitively deserves a mention also. I dont ever recall him being hurt, even if he fought some really hard punchers.

ali also obvioulsy. I think he might even had a better chin than Chuvalo

  5. Slice N Dice

Slice N Dice Big stiff idiot

Oliver McCall had the best chin I've ever seen. The guy was taking flush unprotected punches to the face from Lennox Lewis in the middle of a mental breakdown and barely flinched.

Yes I know you have to prove yourself and we can't rate a 5-0 prospect over Julio Cesar Chavez in any circumstances

But the thing is, we have had several fighters who have proven their chins against the very best of them and haven't gone down or been even clearly hurt

From heavyweight only, there is Chuvalo, McCall, Marion Wilson (he took humongous shots without having any defensive skill), Ali (even though he was down, he also took some good ones) and maybe even Foreman, who all are nearly impossible to rate in any kind of order.

And on what basis would you rate Hagler, Ross and Lamotta compared to one another?

I can't make any sense of this but if you can, go on

yeah but at the end of the day, you can use this argument for every attribute. Who knows if Hearns really hit any harder than a guy like Trinidad?

Yeah, but with punches there is something you can compare.

You can say "this guy knocked that guy out with one punch while that guy took this guys best shots" and "this guy needed ten shots to KO that guy while this guy knocked him out with one".

With the best chins, it is "this guy took all the best punches of all the best fighters, but so did this, this and this guy"

It would be the same as comparing the punch of two guys who both have KOed all their opponents with one punch

Not really, You can compare how many flush punches he took, by whom, How may times he was hurt. And since in p4p4 and era for era comparaison you don't have the privilege of a direct comparaison (fighters fighting the same opponents), your example doesn't really fit.

  10. Neil

    Neil tueur de grenouilles

    he had so much potential

  11. Jeffy

    Jeffy Undisputed Champion

McCall, Mercer, Tua, Vitali as far as heavyweights go. Doesnt get much better than them chins.

Wouldn't put Vitaly there, since he got floor by Sanders (who was a very hard puncher though)

Edit: re-watching Vitaly-Sanders reminded me how good he actually was. I'm often very hard on him since his opposition is absolutely putrid, but the guy was a quality fighter. And the first few rounds of that fight were absolutely electric

It wasn't a KD but Vitali doesn't belong since Lewis and Sanders were the only really big punchers he faced.

Mercer was down against Holyfield and Tua against Rahman (it was a fighting situation) and later Barret too, so I wouldn't quite put them up there with McCall, Chuvalo and Wilson

  14. Slice N Dice

Slice N Dice Big stiff idiot

Tua had a very good chin but I wouldn't put it on the same level as McCall. Tua was knocked out as an amateur and Barrett dropped him as a pro. McCall was never off his feet as an amateur, professional, or in 200 odd rounds of sparring with Tyson. I barely remember him being hurt.

    Let's NOT Complicate This Fellas...

Factor in the Amount of LEGIT, Undisputed Punchers a Guy Fought, Multiply That By How LEAKY his Defense Is, and Subtract How Badly Those Shots AFFECTED Him (Dropped, Staggered, etc.), to Determine How GOOD a Guy's Chin Was...

    It's All MATH...

It was a clear kd. THe ref fumbled this one.

Agreed, but to be honest, Tua was past his prime when he got floored by Barrett, and the Rahamn kd was more of a slip (caused by a jab)

I thought the Tua knockdown against Rahman was the one that wasn't counted in the second fight right at the bell.

  19. Slice N Dice

Yeah no doubt, but that's also why I wouldn't put him in the same bracket as the Atomic Bull, who was still shaking off punches like a cow shakes off flies in his mid-40's.

  21. All good answers so far...can we get some examples where a guy took a flush shot off a big-hitter and didn't buckle ?

Oliver McCall gets mentioned due to his 2nd fight x Lennox Lewis...where I had to rewind the clip to watch it again.
Some of those shots he took were fockin insane.
(But who knows what he was on?)

Júlio César Chavez took a huge punch off Roger Mayweather in, I think, their 2nd fight...that would've levelled anyone but Chavez took it and kept coming...

    REED:hammert:

  23. Vitali Klitschko: massive uppercut off Lewis and didn't buckle...

Marvin Hagler in the Hearns fight and especially the Mugabi fight...

    Wayne McCoullough in any fight....

  24. REED....I heard that PCP or 'Angel Dust' can dull the pain sensors so a person haant got a clue what level of pain or blunt-force trauma he / she is going through...

True, but Getting Knocked Unconscious Isn't Really About PAIN...REED Could Be Wrong, But He Doesn't Think Amir Khan Takes a BETTER Punch if he's On PCP or "Angel Dust"...

  29. An obvious one I forgot: José Luis Lopez taking shot after shot for 12 rounds vs James Page (168 guy fighting at 147): a legendary, underrated fight.

´El Maestrito´ was a monster for taking big shots....no wonder De La Hoya avoided this guy at 147...

  30. Check out Round 5 at 20:00 and tell me that aint a great chin:
