One of the top 5 "what if?" matchups of the 90s. Who wins? I can't envision Ike winning this. Quartey had the style to be Hell for Oscar, and Oscar had the style to be Hell for Trinidad, but Trinidad was ALL WRONG for Ike. I think Quartey has the lead through about 6, but at some point the Trinidad firepower takes over and Quartey gets beaten up and eventually put away in about 10 or 11.
Ike's athleticism and counter punching will cause problems while Trinidad tries get pass the jab but eventually Trinidad starts to hurt him and force the pace. Tito either stops him late or wins a comfortable decision with Ike battling back to survive.
You picked Leonard to stop Quartey by fighting like Felix Trinidad. Lol. SRL would only try to walk through Ike if he was down on the cards and desperate because Ike was stronger and a solid puncher.
Leonard wouldn't have to "stalk" Ike to stop him. He could simply catch him between combos the same way Oscar did. Quartey had flawed technique when he opened up. He slapped a lot. Leonard, being the FAARRR faster puncher, gets there first everytime.
Leonard would hit him and he'd win but he's not a big enough puncher and Ike is too durable and resistant to act like it's just a matter of time until it happened. It likely wouldn't happen because Leonard isn't going to stop him with one punch and he has to get around Ikes jab and then get back to safe distance after he scores.
Trinidad. I always ranked Trinidad at the top of the 90s Welterweight big 4 (Trinidad, De La Hoya, Quartey and Whitaker)
Same. Makes me wonder what woulda happened had DLH actually fought a welter Tito who WASN'T struggling with the weight.
I wonder how effective JL Castillo woulda been if he wasn't a junior middleweight fighting lightweights.
I think Tito would have won a close decision all the same, but would have done more damage. At 154, Tito has a legit chance at a late stoppage due to Oscar being more of a flat-footed pocket fighter. But for the sake of this match up, I like Trinidad via late stoppage. Ike tends to slap with his right hand as you said, and a tall, rangy guy like Trinidad could easily counter over the top of that with that short left hook. Eventually, that does the damage and unlike Lopez, Trinidad would not let Quartey survive.
