They should have the rematch but only if the purse is split 50/50. If Ward makes more than Kovalev in the rematch, then that would make it two robberies in a row.

 

Yeah I just watched it with no commentary. I think Ward fought scared and negative throughout and hardly landed any meaningful head shots until the 7th round as most of his shots up to that point were usually glancing blows. On top of that Ward was supposed to be the quicker fighter yet Kov was continually beating Ward to the punch and out countering him. The only rounds I gave Ward was 8, 9, 11, and a mostly hugfest of a 12th. 7 and 11 were probably the closest hardest rounds to judge.

Anyone who gave this to Ward must have been counting all the holding and hitting that was going on and putting too much stock in some of Ward's more flashy punches even when they mostly caught Kov's glove or were glancing. By the way I predicted and rooted for a Ward win so I obviously have no bias here.

We could even argue 8 rounds to 4 for Kovalev. But I still don't see how the judges gave Ward 7 rounds. They must have been listening to that hbo commentary which was heavily pro-Ward.

WArd finding a way to fight back and make this a competitive bout was admirable, but he did not won that fight

 

I missed the first six rounds and only saw rounds 7 through 12...

Fortunately I listened to the HBO Latino feed and didn't have to listen to the regular HBO crew. I thought Ward controlled the fight over the last half of the fight. Not sure how Kovalev won the 12th as so many have said here. The rounds over the last half were close but I thought Ward won them.

If Kovalev won the first 6 plus the knockdown he should have won a close decision. There was a ton of holding and I was surprised at how Kovalev either initiated it or was satisfied with staying in clinches. Also, Ward didn't get enough credit for his bodyshots which I thought played into how Kovalev slowed down.

I was surprised and impressed with how well Kovalev jabbed and kept Ward off balance and made him think twice about coming in at times. On the other hand, Ward seemed like he figured out the timing of Kovalev's right hand and made him miss with it a bit over the 2nd half of the fight.

I can't see how it was a "robbery." It was a close fight and I could see how it would have gone either way depending on how the first 6 rounds were scored.

I thought both guys fought well in spots. Ward showed more grit than I thought he had while Kovalev showed more skill than I thought he had.

And Kovalev didn't win all of the first 6 rounds hence why a one point win for Ward is not a robbery. Second half of the fight did belong to Ward.

 

I always knew Kov had skill. Some people called him robotic just cause he's a Euro, but it's always been apparent that the man is athletic, fluid, and can box.

Having said that, his skill definitely surprised me last Sat.

Essentially, Kov outboxed Ward. Ward had to out-grit Kov to make it a close fight on the inside, but from a distance Kov was the better man throughout.

This was a close fight, most rounds were very close. All these people that cried robbery simply don't know how to score fights.

It could have been scored either way...not unlike the first Pacquiao-Marquez fight.
