Monster films is among my leading sub genres of film. I absolutely LOVE films where there is some (non-human) creature or creatures killing people one after the other...leaving a trail of dismembered bodies in it's/their wake. Don't ask me why...perhaps I like getting a little scared and tense or perhaps I'm a little sick in the head.

    Jaws
    Alien
    Aliens
    Predator
    Terminator
    Pitch Black
    Jurassic Park
    Alligator
    The Mist
    Arachnophobia

I dunno if it's the best movie on that list, but The Mist is one of the most UNDERRATED movies of all time. It's an amazing movie.

My favorite movies on that list are Jurassic Park, Terminator, Jaws, The Mist, and Predator. Don't really care for the rest. Arachnophobia from what I remember was pretty shitty.

Best movie on that list IMO is Jurassic Park. Plain and simple one of the best movies ever made, and none of the sequels in the franchise have even come close.

    YUP!
The Mist is a great film. I have watched it a few times with my family since I bought the blu-ray.
Jurassic Park was good, but not great IMO. You take away the CGI dinosaurs and you don't have much of a film left except for the typical Spielberg jokes. ALIENS on the other hand works so well in so many levels: great action, great horror scenes, lots of tension, engaging characters, intelligent plot, great scifi. Heck even if Cameron had decided not to show the creatures the film is still pretty tense! Love that film.

People love to hate on Vin Diesel and that's why many wouldn't praise Pitch Black...but it was a very good film. Excellent concept, well written, directed, and acted.

Yup ALIENS was superb; as good as Alien. Mist is definitely one of my all time favourites. I disagree with you on Jurassic Park though. You can't separate the film from the CGI dinosaurs...that's all part of what made the film great. The drama of the first time the T-Rex was revealed (impact tremors seen in the water) is just an all time classic moment in film.

The first title doesn't ring a bell in my head, but 'Forbidden Planet' is more science fiction than 'monster movie'. Great classic by the way.

Forbidden Planet was a monster movie at its core, despite being science fiction. The central theme of that film was that on that planet was that some unseen monster was killing everyone that landed.

Yes you can: the same way that you separated that scene of the T-Rex first appeareance I can separate the non-dinos sequences and for the most part they are not that much. Heck, there are a few moments cringe worthy as you know that there is nothing really there but the actors are reacting and we were supposed to feel their plight, but didn't. The two most effective non-cgi sequences were the vehicle falling from the tree and the kids in the kitchen with the stuntmen in raptors costumes.

What would y'all say is the scariest monster from any monster film?

For me, the one that gave me the most nightmares (literally) is The Predator. The Predator was one scary ass motherfucker. All stealthy, agile, ruthless, trophy collecting and shit.

I just thought the Predator was cool and not scary one iota. Its just hunter with a load of hi-tech weapons.

The ´xenomorph´ from Alien is far scarier, because it implies a lot more than just killing folks.
From the first movie you have its hive mentality, the breeding and the obvious rape angle....it looks incredibly sinister too - overall very creepy and disturbing aspects....

TBH when I first watched Predator I was completely disappointed with it. It took me a couple of more viewings to appreciate it.

John Carpenter's The Thing was truly creepy and stomach turning at the same time. What it did to those dogs haunted me for a few days.

The Korean film The Host is so far the most disturbing of the modern ones.

First time I watched it was on a fucking wet and windy Saturday afternoon back in the late 1980s.
We´d been drinking beer since 11am, decided to get a MaccyD´s and saw it was showing.

    Thought it was hilarious.

Again. I thought it was cool what it did to the dogs.
Id like to own one of those dogs and set it on you and Sly.

What´s wrong with you all? :scratcher:

I can't argue with your logic but predator frightens me more. Alien is a vicious scary looking brute and the facehugger cheat burster thing is unpleasant but it's still a wild animal of sorts. What frightens me about predator is that it is a civilized sapient being that just sees men as trophies and kills for sport. Also the fact that it's invisible, stealthy and calculated. Psychologically it frightens the hell out of me.

suggestion: to be a 'monster movie', probably best if there is basically one main monster in it. that's what's going on psychologically in jaws, king kong, the first alien - there's some big, non-human thing out there. - so e.g. arachnophobia doesn't get in.

Beowulf an early, non-cinematic example of the genre.

Still dont see why or how: its just a monster-mercenary. :dunno:
I cant see any reason why it should ´scare´ you.

The unknown should scare you more. Something that plays on your mind. Something warped or twisted.
Like in Alien, you know that the xenomoprh that came out of Kane, when it approached Lambert, it was clearly terrorizing her because of the ´memories´ it retained from Kane. It then put those memories into practice in a sexually-brutalizing way, but clearly didnt know exactly what to do.....but it tried anyway, with horrific results.

Ditto, Brett and Dallas - it didnt even kill those two: it used them as incubators for eggs.
Brett actually was turning into an egg.

Far, far more distubring that some dreadlock-monster with a ray-gun.

Say what? Where did you get this insight. I've watch Alien numerous times and never saw brett turning into an egg. lol I always assumed Dallas was dead too. A normal Xenomorph doesn't produce eggs, Are you just making this stuff up?

Look at the Director´s Cut.....when she sees Dallas, clearly alive because he is moaning in pain (probably has one inside him)...then to the left or right of him, is Brett (or what´s left of him)...

    Check this Sly:

I'm glad they cut this scene out of the original cinematic release though. It adds no value.
