Rogue One: A Star Wars story opened Thursday night with a whooping $29 million making it the biggest Thursday night opening of the year besting Batman v Superman ($27 million) and Captain America: Civil War. The anthology film is now enroute to grab a smashing $120-$150 million weekend gross plus it is predicted it will add some $150 million more from the international market. While all those numbers are great it will not come nowhere near close to the out-of-this world record of The Force Awakens which opened to $248 million domestically to eventually end its run with $2.1 billion worldwide. Even if 'Rogue One' makes a little less thn half that amount that will be incentive enough to continue doing these one-shot Star Wars films. I am all for it: after the already in production 'Han Solo' film and the 'Yoda' movie, what about a solo Darth Vader and a solo Darth maul film can be box office smashes and SW nerds wet-dreams!!

Far more plausible than a Darth Maul movie. The guy had two lines in TPM.

Rogue One opened to $155 million gross making it the second best December opening of all time just behind last year's The Force Awakens . Worldwide 'Rogue One' grossed $290 million which is a resounding success for Lucasfilm & Disney and confirming that Disney's plans for spin-off standalone films wasn't as crazy as some naysayers were predicting.

Rogue One dominated the box office on its second week with $64 million. Now its poised to also claim for the third time in a row the top spot this New Year's box office. The Lucasfilm production is already the third most successful domestic title of 2016 with $375 million just behind two other Disney films: Captain America: Civil War ($408 million) and Finding Dory ($486 million). While the Star Wars One Shot film will most likely end its run with over $400 million domestically, it is still up in the air if it can reach the magical $1 billion worldwide. So far it has grossed $687.7 million in just two weeks. It still hasn't opened in China, but Star wars isn't big there as 'The Force Awakens' underperformed there. However 'Rogue One' has two very popular Chinese actors in juicy supporting roles and there is a possibility it will do better than TFA.

Rogue One remained at the #1 position at the box office in its third week by grossing $64.3 million for a domestic total (and counting) of $439 million and claiming the second spot as the second most successful film of 2016. Globally that puts the SW one shot film at $789.7 million.

In a virtual tie Rogue One took the top spot for the fourth week in a row with $21.9 million beating by a hair its closest competitor the black historic drama Hidden Figures which took $21.8 million. These estimates might reverse roles when the actual numbers are released later today. The weaker numbers could be blamed on the severe winter weather on many states that kept many people indoors during the weekend.

'Rogue One' is on its path to take over the 7th spot in the All Time domestic box office pushing aside Finding Dory ($486 million) since it has grossed so far $477 million domestically. It might reach $500 million, but that will not be enough to beat The Dark Knight numbers of $534 million. However it can easily beat the Nolan film in the final worldwide grosses as it will surely surpass the $1 billion grosses of that Batman film. Rogue One right now stands at $914 million. It opened this weekend in China with less than stellar numbers ($34 million) and it could end its run there with $90-$95 million, a far lower number than 'The Force Awakens', but that would be enough to skyrocket it pass the $1 billion mark.

Is official: Rogue One passed the $1 billion mark on worldwide revenues and surpassed also the global numbers for 'The Dark Knight'. In the domestic front it has so far $512 million, just $22 million less than "The Dark Knight" in the #7 All Time list. It might or might not reach that record when it finishes its run. This week it came in the 6th spot with $7 million in its sixth week or 39th day of release.
