You can only name ONE. Not your favorite movie per say. But OBJECTIVELY speaking, all things considered.... what's the greatest movie of all time?

I'd probably say Ben Hur. It was either that or Godfather.

I haven't got a clue to be honest. It's a bit of a loaded question.

The Godfather Saga is the greatest IMO.

Gone With the Wind not my top favorite, but this movie had so many first for cinema in 1939 that it was viewed as movie that revolutionized movies. Epic period piece that that spoke volumes not only of the civil war, but of American society in the 1930's. It was the highest grossing film of all time until 1967, but if you adjust for inflation its numbers, it is still number one as no other film in history has sold more movie tickets and put more butts on movie theaters seats than this one. And contrary to what many wrongly think, this is not a love story, but a story about relationships found and lost and people trying to survive post civil war and the hard choices they made. The two main characters are despicable in their own way, which was unheard of for its time. Great cinematography, great performances, great costumes, great music. Very deserving of its 10 Oscar wins!

The Godfather Saga is one single film.

After the fact mash-ups don't count. Otherwise I would have nominated "The Very Best Of Jackass: Part Deux". :nono:

The Godfather Saga is not one film.

    It also doesn't help that Godfather 3 doesn't hold a candle to 1 & 2.

There's always great debate between 1 & 2, but personally, I can never make a case for 2. IMO, Godfather 1 is CLEARLY a better movie than Godfather 2, although 2 was excellent.

And from an objective standpoint, I would say that Pacino in Godfather 1 is the single greatest acting performance of all time. Although, it is debatable.

Saga doesnt include 3 and is one movie. It's put together with new scenes that were not in the prior movies.

Godfather 1 & 2 is basically one movie.

And for the record, The Godfather is a vastly overrated sacred cow.

Anthony: you are making a fool of yourself. This is like saying that Star Wars is only one film counting only the first one (A New Hope) and Empire Strikes Back. Two films that were NOT filmed simultaneously and that were released on different years.

What about the "Lord Of The Rings" movies? They were filmed simultaneously and are really just one really long movie.

Good job Panchy. I like your answer. It's much easier to believe you than other people who just blurt out an answer without providing any reasoning to back it up.

Even though half of his answer is his usual default reasoning for ´liking´ a movie: Box office dollars.

Holds up really well. I thought of it but still can't rightfully pick a movie for this thread.

Dreyfuss by most accounts was a total cunt in this time of his life, but he really gives a brilliantly under-rated performance in this film.

Based on both greatness and personal bias, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly takes it.

Excellent plot, masterful camera work, iconic music, great acting and a clever anti-war message that is not hammered to the viewer, who is allowed to just enjoy the story.

It is a complete movie that uses all the attributes of cinema and doesn't concentrate just on dialogue or acting

I picked Apocalypse Now....just because its a fucked-up, weird movie of a fucked-up, weird time in history....and it doesnt seem to have any solid ending as such....leaves things open.
(the photography and sound are totally off-the-scale for its time of production which was 1976-78)

I know its an obvious cliche to pick but in all the years I watch it, I always try to imagine of how fucking insane things must have been in Vietnam during the mid-period of the late 1960s, when it all went to shit and there were troops and divisions scattered all over the country doing literally whatever the fuck they wanted.

And, watching Apocalypse Now, is as accurate as it gets as to showing how totally out-of-control things got....

IMO, the greatest movie of all, and the least understood. The theme of the movie is...through the eyes of the insane, a sane man appears to be crazy.
