    Okay, so The Godfather.
First of all, its not a bad movie by any means...but absolutely, and especially in the it was released on home-video in the early 1980s, it´s massive praise far outweighs its artisitc value.
For instance, the pros of acting performed by Robert Duvall and John Cazale are cancelled-out by Marlon Brando´s unfathomable, slovenly and baffling performance - lots of raised eyebrows, shoulder-shrugging, mumbling and classic now-stereotypical greaseball-guinea-gestures.
Robert De Niro, (to be fair it was early in his career), is just developing what would become his standard bag of tricks ´mugging´, the infuriating, stone-faced rolling-eye explosive eruptions of Al Pacino (again, I will give him a slight let-off as he too, was pretty green) and the juvenile, trying-too-hard tough-guy antics of James Caan (who preposteruously used this role to try and associate himself with real fuckin mobsters later in life  )

The photography is good in places, but to me now, looks like its trying to hard to be moody throughout.
Its as if Francis Ford Coppola was trying to give the characters ´weight´ by putting them in poorly lit rooms or with long periods of silence and slight bodily gestures...

A few other flaws: why would the mightly Corleone family send their hit-man to a remote meeting with two other, bigtime family crime-bosses...without any backup whatsoever??
Why is weak-ass, incompetent Fredo Corleone assigned to protect his Father and head of the family with, again alone, woth just a little Derringer pistol that he can´t even fuckin hold properly?
Thats the same Fredo who swore to Micheal he didnt know about the hit in Godfather II - those guys were carrying machine-guns, Fredo.....right?
Tom Hagen telling Micheal Corleone that his wife has lost the baby, Corleone sullenly asks ´was it a boy?´.....WTF? Who would fucking say that???

Baically, media and culture hammers the points home that you must like this movie (and others like it) until you ctually look around, shuffling thinking ´Ummm....yeah....YEAH!! Its the fuckin BOMB!! Hey, you....Im gonna make youse an offer ya cant refuse....yeah, yeah yeah. TRUMP TRUMP TRUMPPPP!
You gonna be sleepin wid da fishes if you fock wid me...okay? Whooooo!!! I love this guinea-Eye-talian Mobster shit!!!
Hey man, Im a mushroom-cloud-layin-mudda-fukka...Im SuperFly Paulie-Gatto-Mo-Green-Luca-Brasi...yo DUMB FUCK, yo´

    Etc, Etc

So far, nothing here changes how great the movie is. It's all opinion based on likes and dislikes of certain actors.

He is portraying bad men. No matter how much you love these people, they are still sleazy thugs who hide in the dark to hurt people. The very few times the movie does portray brightness is when they are doing something actually good. Which is hardly ever.

Because Luca was sent there to try and get information. He as sent there to pretend he was betraying the family in order to dig dirt. It was a different time. There was not all out war. And in everyone's eyes, Luca could handle himself and was not to be trifled with.

Again, different time. The attempted murder of the godfather changed everything. There was peace for a very long time. I doubt Fredo was even there for protection. That was probably just his gun. Vito didnt understand the threat these guys had. He was naive and it cost him.

Because Michael was a selfish asshole. The complete opposite of his father.

The Movie is great. Without even realizing it, everything you listed made me remember how subtle and great it. Good job

For me, I looked at The Godfather as a kid and loved the hell out of it long before I knew it was supposed to be a classic.

The character development is second to none.

Solozzo and Barzini are excellent characters. People always talk about Vito, Michael and Santino..as they were the Dons and Underboss/acting Dons...but the villains were excellent.

I was genuinely intimidated by Solozzo and Barzini showed an ominous subtle strength and power...even though he had very few lines. There were hints to his power at the opening wedding when he had the camera taken from the reporter and destroyed the film (he did it with forceful purpose without showing much emotion) but he was fully revealed in the head of the five families meeting...."Corleone must let us draw water from the well....surely he can leave us a bill for his services...after all, we are not communists". Just brilliant, scary guy.

Sollozzo in the initial meeting with Vito, Santino and the crew showed by his manner and presence that he was someone to respect.

Fredo played the idiot in a subtle way...not like the over the top Forrest gump performance of Tom Hanks. It was obvious that Fredo was slow without him having to go out of his way to show it.

And there were so many classic scenes:

    Meeting of teh five families
Michael's revenge on the five families during his nephew's baptism (absolute classic)
The horse head in the bed (jokes to come, I'm sure)
The Mo Greene Scene when Michael Arrives in Vegas ("Do you know who I am? I'm Mo Greene...I made my bones when you were banging cheerleaders")
Michael, Sollazo and McCluskey at the restaurant in Brooklyn
    Vito at the hospital

The list goes on. Tremendous film.

Not necessarily in the ranking for greatest film of all time but Magnum Force (Dirty Harry Sequel) was a great great film.

Agreed with every word... Magus' quibbles are exactly underlining why the film is a masterpiece

James Caan performance was terrible, over-the-top and cringe worthy at times. Badly miscast here.

He was suppose to be. He was the perfect example of what not to be. His character was a lesson. Reckless and prideful will get you killed.

I think 12 Angry Men has an EXCELLENT argument for being the best movie ever.

The resident elitist film buffs won't like me saying this but Lord of the Rings deserves mention. Fantastic work of art.

Sorry Anthony, accept my most humble apologies. I forgot that you were the foremost authority on film and cinema on the planet and that you should be first consulted before anyone is allowed to suggest a film is great. I was only told a week ago, that you received a nobel prize for your contribution to the motion picture arts, so forgive me for forgetting.

Watched both of these movies over the last 24hrs. ..Platoon is just dull. Every Vietnam cliché you can think of, shit acting, nothing to make you think about whatsoever.
I found myself FF through it, remembering that when I first saw it, a huge feeling of 'whatever'.

So....you can tell your Dad from me, the Dark Magus himself, that no matter how many gooks he wasted while smoking Purple-Haze on a Navy PB or running through Hue with an M62 firing indiscriminately and drugged out his head.....he's fucking wrong.

The Color Purple is an extremely overrated film loved by the Liberal media because of its subject and its director. I couldn't watch the whole damn thing and I am a Spielberg fan.
