Mike would have Carl Williams'd AJ.

 

Prime Mike would have smoked the whole division.

 

And Dr. J. would dunk over Lebron

 

It's a recurring theme with boxing that no sooner does something good happen, that people reach into the mists of time to find something BETTER that would have BEATEN the recent good.

Simply how it is, I am not passing judgment on it as such.

Bert Sugar and Pat Putnam were particularly good at it.

 

Dr. J wasn't better than Lebron, but he goddamn sure was capable of dunking over anyone in history.

Not really a very good analogy: Hide had major psychological issues outside of boxing...

 

I'm STILL far from sold on Joshua. I think his chin is dodgy and a prime, elite fighter would have finished what Wald couldn't in that 6th round,. Joshua basically wandered around on heavy legs for three more rounds, looking like dogshit. He got away with it because he was fighting a 41 year old who struggles to pull the trigger now more than he ever did. And he (Wald) has been gunshy for about a decade. And for all his much vaunted 'power', he needed the ref to stop a guy most round here think has a chin of glass. He hits hard, but not as hard as advertised IMO.

That said, I was impressed by the way he found a way to win when he looked like he was done. All the good and great have that in them. And his heart cannot be questioned after that fight. As others have said, he's an aggressive fighter: he throws punches with intent and never looks content to coast his way to the end if he can end things earlier. And he is certainly closing in on mainstream attraction status. In the UK he is by far and away the most well-known active boxer and is one of the UK's most well-known sporting figures. He's an affable, if somewhat manufactured, bloke, which always adds to the mainstream appeal. The good news for him is that he has not a lot to worry about in terms of who might dethrone him. His only real rivals are a wild, powerful but limited banger from the States not many have heard of outside the sport, an even more limited, powerful banger from the other side of the world no-one outside the sport has heard of, and a morbidly obese pikey.

An aggressive, hard-hitting, dominant heavyweight boxer will always command headlines. Heavyweight remains the marquee divison, and Joshua is likely to be the marquee name in it for a good few years yet.

I do agree that AJ is fortunate to not have a Tyson or Lewis around to pose a threat. Against those types of fighters he'd have a lot of problems.
I don't think his chin is bad, but against punchers like that, forget it.

If Fury can make it back (Doubtful from what I've seen), that would be a huge showdown.

Yeah, Joshua would have been in a world of trouble if that was Wilder in there during that 6th round, if Wilder had got to that point in the fight, of course. Even if he comes in 10lbs lighter next time, he may just have overall bad stamina. He's just too top heavy. He's got to move his head more as he's really not hard to find at all. There's not much wrong with his offense, despite looking quite predictable at times.

 

Wilder can hit but I think he's too sloppy to beat AJ. And in his last two fights, he looks to have regressed. He can't throw a straight punch to save his life.

That's true. Dude used to show some potential, and looked like he could develop into a solid fighter. But he has looked terrible lately.

Bruno really is the best comparison for Joshua. Joshua appears to be better in all ways, except maybe pure punching power and maybe charisma, but he lacks neither of those.

A better Bruno is a formidable fighter who figures to compare well historically. I'd be very surprised if Joshua ends up not making top 20 lists and I'm not dismissing his chances to be way higher when all is said and done.
