Vernon has the height and the reach, jab, and power to test Spence. But on the flip side, Vernon never fought anyone with the offensive skills of Spence. He'd find it much more difficult to keep Spence at long range for 12 rounds the way he did Mosley in both of their fights. Gentlemen of the jury, what is the verdict?
The big question with Spencebis just how good his chin is and how he responds to someone who can hurt him consistently. I can see him eating a lot of Forrest right hands as he tries to close distance.
I think Spencer's chin is good enough to deal with Vernon's power. I think the reverse is true too (Mayorga was an aberration IMO). I see this as pretty evenly matched. Spence maybe by close decision. Spence would also beat the brakes off Shane Mosley by the way
Mosley would beat Spence to the punch all night and I don't think Spence could turn it around enough late.
Lemme give you a tip.... ANYTIME you see Sly mention Mosley, just scroll to the next post. It's not even worth readin. I'm a bigger fan of Spence than I EVER was on Mosley, but if you ask me currently... I'd say prime Mosley wins.
Prime Mosley wasn't very good. He was fast handed and exciting with decent power and that's it. Spence beats him no doubt. De La Hoya was the only top fighter Shane beat and I think he only won that fight because De La Hoya fought his fight ( like Leonard Duran 1)
I'm definitely more of a Spence fan than a Mosley fan. But I would like to see more from Spence before picking him over Mosley. The way he handles himself vs Thurman and the other guys at 154 will tell us a lot more about him. But I will say this, Spence does bring a tough package for Mosley to beat. Particularly with the height and reach, physical strength, southpaw jab, and body punching. Would be intriguing.
Correction: Mosley was very good but not great. He could beat up mediocre and decent guys all day long but the upper echelon good boxers would always beat him. I give Mosley credit for beating up Margarito though. Even though Margarito was just a slugger, the fact is he was big and strong and tough and Shane slugged him out of there.
