The exact quote is "I think Canelo even matches Lamotta for chin."

I stand by that. I guess we'll all know for sure when he fights GGG.

REED Tries to Stay OUT of You and X's Debates, but in This PARTICULAR Instance, REED Has to Speak Up, Bruh...

LaMotta Had an EPIC, All Time GREAT Chin...Canelo Was BADLY Hurt and Flirted w/a 1st Round KO LOSS to Miguel Cotto's BROTHER, Many Years Ago...Not to Mention Canelo Being TAMED by a Smaller Floyd, in the Mid to Latter Rounds of that Bout...

While Canelo TAKES a Good Shot, but his Chin ISN'T "All Time" Level, in REED's Opinion...

That Being Said, REED Agrees w/YOU in Canelo Possibly BEATING Jake LaMotta, Head to Head, and Definitely Faring MUCH Better Against Him than the "Good Ol' Days" Crowd Would Like to Admit...

Sorry if I disagree, but I think there's a shitload of middleweights in history who beat Canelo.

There's a shit load of middleweights from the 90s ALONE who would beat Canelo.

Pardon me if destroying guys like Khan, Kirkland, and Liam Smith doesn't blow my mind.

I don't think he'd be able to keep Lamotta off him.

I agree with you that there are MANY Middleweights that would have beaten Canelo...just off the top of my head:

Hagler, Hopkins, Monzon, Hearns, Leonard, Jones, Robinson, PRIME GGG.

Lamotta however was not in that class.

I'll add Nunn, Toney and Eubank to that list too (that would beat Canelo). Not sure about Benn though as Benn was chinny.

Benn would fuck Canelo up horribly.

You can add McCallum, Jackson, Reggie Johnson, McClellan, Watson, and Collins to the list of 90s middles would who would spank the Ginger.

Jackson is more punchers' chance for me....helluva punchers chance granted but still I don't see Jackson winning on points or even leading in the fight. I don't have as much respect for Watson as most do. Decent fighter but "straight up and down with no special effects" as someone we know would say. Watson would probably beat Canelo on points but I wouldn't bet on it. Collins was more of a supermiddle methinks. Benn could beat Canelo because of his power, but Canelo is a better overall fighter than benn. Benn had no defense and a very shaky chin.

Jackson was a better technician than Canelo, and a good 3-4 inches taller. Canelo is slow of foot and would be on the end of Jackson's punches. Game over.

I don't see Canelo as a guy that deserves a shortlist of great fighters that would beat him. At all.

True, he hasn't earned it yet. However he hasn't earned the "bum status" that xpmosive and others are bestowing on him either...

Definitely. That Nunn one-punch KO hurts the perception of Kalambay. Not like he's talked about much anyway, but when he is, that usually comes up. That was one loud bomb that Nunn landed.

The first fight with McCallum was a masterful defensive performance. Canelo's weaknesses fall right into Kalambay's hands. His movement and slick defensive skills would frustrate the hell out of Canelo, as it did McCallum. It would probably be about as competitive as Mayweather-Canelo.

I remember Max Kellerman's laughable talk about Sergio Martinez being a "super fighter"
and thinking he'd be just another guy at MW if he was born twenty years earlier.

Over at ESB, someone said Marvin Hagler was far better than Michael Spinks and would have kicked his ass straight up at 175.

Other gems at ESB off the top of my head include (paraphrased) "Miguel Cotto was far better than prime Simon Brown", "Cotto is greater than PR fighters like Wilfred Benitez and Wilfredo Gomez because he won world titles in more divisions", and "Pacquiao was no better in 2010 than he was in 2015".

Oh, Jackson was definitely a better fighter. Very few advantages for Canelo. Canelo seems to have a solid chin, while Jackson had an average chin, but what other advantages did Canelo have?

Jackson kicks Canelo's ass at 154. At 160, Jackson had eye issues because of the detached retina, so maybe Canelo could take advantage of that. But Jackson was still able to score a miracle KO against Graham, and hold the title until 93', albeit against modest opposition. Thomas Tate was a respectable contender though.

Canelo could probably beat the faded Jackson of the mid to late 90s, but he has a pretty slim chance against Jackson when he was in or near his prime.

Canelo is just a good fighter, solid skills but really lacking in physical gifts, who'd be a middle of the road contender if the era wasn't so weak.

I usually only talk boxing with 2 co-workers but since Mayweather-McGregor was signed, I've been hearing all kinds of crazy shit from other people.
    - Conor would knockout everyone Floyd has fought. When I said I wouldn't even pick him to beat Berto, he replied "who? well IDK about him but he'd KO pacquiao for sure"
-Floyd is going to be the one not knowing what to do with Conor because he'll be out of his element fighting someone who is not classically trained as a boxer. As if this were in the cage or with MMA rules and Conor would be completely comfortable in the ring.
This was the day after the fight was announced. I've been avoiding any more conversation about the fight since.

AgREED. Erratic is spot on as well. Canelo is a decent champion in a truly awful era of middleweight fighters. Awful. Canelo's resume makes Hopkins MW reign look like an absolute murderers row.

    Curious...what makes Canelo "awful"?

He's a small Middleweight, I grant you, but what makes him awful? What are his flaws?

Canelo's not awful. Overrated would be the better term.

    His popularity outweighs his talent.

Granted, as we begin to evaluate him more, Golovkin is also overrated.

I agree that his popularity outweighs his talent. Being a pasty coloured, ginger haired, small-nosed, freckle-faced Mexican would do that for you. His unique look helped to create the fame as Mexican's tend to look like this:

The kid has skills though: dependable chin, fast hands, great combination puncher, decent power, good balance, great puncher to both head and body, decent defense. I think he's underrated by hard core fans to overcompensate for his popularity (as is usually the case)
