I suppose it's an appropriate title for him given the way he fought, but this is more about his brain damage.

He was known to go all-out in sparring, and I'm sure that played a role in his brain damage (same with James Toney). He didn't take any prolonged beatings in fights, his chin didn't allow it.

    Behind boxing's brain damage crisis

Seems like a nice guy. Boxing is very brutal. There should be something in place to protect these people. Say if you get knocked out 5 times in 5 years you are forced to retire. I still can't believe Roy is still fighting and getting ko'ed all across the globe.

It wasn't really a long beating. He got hurt late in the 8th I think with a right hand, and then got stopped the next round.

It's interesting though how some fighters can take a lot of punishment with seemingly little long term effects and others can't. Very unpredictable.

Jake LaMotta is still sharp at almost 100 years old. Matthew Saad Muhammad didn't seem to have any serious brain damage after he fought.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Arturo Gatti was suffering from brain damage when he died.

he doesn't seems to be in that bad of a shape, but still, it's sad to see what the sport does to some of these guys. I wonder if his brother is also suffering from neurological damage

I think brian damage probably had a lot to do with Gatti's impulsive suicide.

    Yeah, plus the alcohol abuse.

Alcohol abuse is common in suicide, and now we're seeing CTE common in suicide. Gatti may have been suffering from both.
