Yeah, that's what I've heard. I've never seen the original The Fly, but by EVERY account I've heard, Goldblum's 86 version was much better.

That's exactly what I was thinking. He's hilarious in that movie yet he seems to have no sense of humor in real life and takes himself way too seriously.

One early movie I liked of his was the juvenile prison movie 'Bad Boys' with Esai Morales and that demented guard from Shawshank.

Kevin Bacon was also really good in The Woodsman when he played the pedo.

Goldblum was great in that. I saw it as a kid, that was a fucked up movie to watch then. That last scene is definitely sad as hell.

George Chuvalo is the guy who get his wrist snapped arm-wrestling.

I love that movie. It's apparently a remake of a British movie called 'Scum' with Ray Winstone.

I haven't seen that but that got good reviews too.

I never noticed the goof during the climatic fight scene at 0:13 until recently

It's been years since I've seen that film. Didn't realize that was Chuvalo.

I see him up at the HOF nearly every year. Seems like a really good dude. Had a really tragic life, but it seems as if he's done ok for himself and he still seems to be in good shape with most of his faculties at nearly 80 years old now.

Is this true? I didn't know there was a US version of Scum knocking around...Scum, by the way, is a truly fucking excellent movie.

I don't know if it was an official remake but it's supposed to be very similar.

I've never seen all of Scum, just the "I'm the daddy" scene.

You must watch it keeping in mind it is a movie from 1958. Contrary to the Cronenberg remake the scientist is a happily married man with a son and a brother, making the experiment gone wrong even more tragic and the ending even more sad than the remake. Plus that film put in the map upcoming actor Vincent Price.

I just watched the orginal version on Netflix.

Better than I expected, and better than I had heard, but still... the 86 version is much much better.

  23. I preferred the original version actually. Better story. Terrible special effects of course but better story and it has a particularly shocking reveal of the fly.

Better story or not, the 86 version is still superior, and not just by way of special effects - better acting and execution as well.

Face it, the 58 version suffered from a lot of the wooden acting that you see in many (but not all) 40s and 50s movies.

And the main character, David Hedison, doesn't hold a candle to Jeff Goldblum in terms of charisma and acting ability. Despite the fact that he played a "family man", he wasn't a family man who you gave a shit about. His own son didn't even care that he got killed for Christ Sake.

The 58 version's ONLY saving grace is the iconic spider scene, which I admit, is creepy even today.

But that ONE scene isn't enough to make the original better.

I like Goldblum's slow, progressive transformation into a monster in 86 version as opposed to the stupid ass hiding a bag over his head in the 58 version.

  25. Fair enough. To each his own.
