left pull-counter against MMA fighters rushing in with sloppy rights, and left cross thrown from the outside - those two account for the vast majority of important punches mcgregor's ever landed. surely they're just not even gonna get close to landing on floyd's head, no matter how little it is.

McGregor isn't Maidana though - he's primarily a counter puncher.

He moves in aggressively with his footwork forcing the opponent to punch. He attacked first in all his fights and started counter punching once he stood in the pocket.

Yeah he's an offensive counter puncher.

Still, against Floyd his counters will hit clean air. He's got to lead against Floyd, close up, bully him, wrestle - but Floyd has plenty of tricks to deal with all of that..

That would be a terrible strategy. He needs to do a Horn on Mayweather, grind the old man down.

If you look at tape of Arturo Gatti using his boxing skills against Ward and Dorin and a few others, the guy looked 10X more skillful than McGregor does in those clips. Against Floyd, however, it looked as though Gatti hadn't even put on a pair of gloves in his life.

The only way I can sorta-see mcgregor having success is by roughing him up something fierce with half executed throws, hold and hit, fuck his balance up, rabbit punch him, kidney punch, bully him. floyd is a master of that dirty inside game in a boxing context so im not sure even that'd work but it's the only thing mcgregor might bring to the table

basically, looking at the prior performances, there's nothing you can look at and say: "if CM does something like that kind of punch/boxing tactic/move, and floyd does something like that kind of punch/boxing tactic/move, then CM has a chance." the only thing that CM has in his favour, which might cause someone to think that he has any kind of chance, is just the fact that this guy is a bit of a phenom: he's radically outperformed expectations before, and so maybe he can radically outperform expectations again this time, even if we can't really envisage the detail.

Yup, on paper it's a mismatch...it's only the "x factor" that makes this somewhat intriguing.

Only way I can see Conor having a shot...is if he distracts Floyd with crazy antics and then manages to land a lucky punch that happens to have a devastating effect. That's it. Other than that what can he do? If he's aggressive Floyd will counter him to death...if he's not aggressive, Floyd will potshot him to death. If they slug it out...Floyd will slug him to death. If they do a boxing chess match...Floyd will fork his king and queen, pin his two rooks, take all his pawns and cause Conor to resign before the inevitable check mate. On paper Conor has zero chance...especially now as it seems that Floyd is pretty motivated to win in spectacular fashion.

I like this thread because it provides a logical and empirical basis to explain what most of us know intuitively, which is that someome who has never boxed before is not likely to pose a serious threat in a boxing match against someone who has boxed his whole life.

Let alone somebody who has been at the top of that profession for the past 15-odd years. It's a joke.

that's how i saw it when it was announced. but listening to mcgregor do a few interviews about it got me interested. the man is utterly, bizarrely convinced that he's gonna win, like Ali was before the first Liston fight. - that's made it intriguing for me, at least.

Floyd vs. McGregor will look a whole lot like Floyd vs. N'dou...just turn N'dou southpaw....

Since I won't be watching the fight I do have this feeling that I will wake up at 2:30am n on my phone it will say "Biggest upset in boxing history McGregor Ko Floyd in 1"

    This fight is huge!

Definitely much bigger than any fight in recent history. Main reason for this though is the fact that it's a crossover fight..so it has combined UFC fans with boxing fans and then added additional interest from people that wouldn't usually watch either.

Conor is selling the fight more than Floyd....but Floyd is also a character that sells fights.

You can't miss this event...even though it'll be a mismatch.

Would be pretty good for boxing's esteem if floyd clowns him.

This fight is a GIMME to make boxing look good. But boxing fans have THE WORST luck of any sports fans, so with our luck, watch Floyd screw this up. It'll be Floyd's big "FUCK YOU" to boxing fans after we helped make him one of the biggest athletes on Earth. Watch him fuck us...

    lol

Nah...Floyd's sufficiently motivated (and concerned) to ensure that he has prepared properly and win in dominant fashion.

Neil might be compelled to root for McGregor after hearing McGregor say that he's a huge fan of Rigondeux.

i don't think Floyd will look good

the variable really is how good McGregor will be...but generally against a boxer Floyd right now would be incredible stinky - picture Whitaker combined with old Hopkins

Agreed Punk, that's his only shot to make anything happen, is basically pull a Jeff Horn. But easier said than done against Floyd, who is an excellent infighter and much stronger than he looks.

The idea of McGregor outboxing Floyd from the outside using his left hand and "MMA distance" (lolol) is laughable. If McGregor hangs back on the outside, he'll get picked apart with ease and look like the 0-0 pro boxer he is.
