This event and the fight itself was a benefit to both sports IMO. I think future fights on both sides will generate more interest from casuals. I think MMA casuals will be more interested in boxing now and vice versa.

Also...fight fans hate seeing the overly defensive un-hittable Floyd, I think he'll get more respect now that he got hit more and stayed in an aggressive posture and role and ended his career with a knockout.

Yeah, it will be fun to see if this will spur more crossover type matchups in the future.

I hope this event stops any future crossovers: it's 100% clear an elite 'striker' from the MMA world is far, far below par in striking when it comes to Boxing with 8oz gloves and shoes.
McGregor looked next to useless after 3-4 rounds.
    His punching technique was WANK.
    Hugely disappointing.

Professional Boxers thinking of entering The Octagon should equally stay WELL away and avoid quick 'detachment' from their central nervous-system....

Agreed with the first part strongly disagree with the second. I have no interest in seeing world class fighter waste their time with MMA fighters who are well below the elite level. But I don't get how you wouldn't be interested in seeing boxers fight in MMA. Of course they'd need to transition and take the time to learn the craft (as Holy Holm did in wmma, but it would only raise the game

    Hopefully not.

Fighters in both sports should just remain in their element.

Boxers don't have the ground game and kicking ability to excel in the octagon, and MMA fighters don't have the hand skills to excel in boxing.

BOTH sports can c0-exist without the need for any crossover.

Surprised that McGregor didn't lose a point for his repeated hammer fists to Floyd's brain stem.

Because, just as it takes years of training in Boxing to be an elite puncher (as others have expained elsewhere on this thread), it takes equal time for a pure Boxer to learn how to kick (Muay-Thai or Taekwondo) and even longer to get the basics for grappling (either Wrestling or Brasilian Jiu-Jitsu - the latter being very complex to master).

Put Adonis Stevenson in The Octagon with Jon Jones or Daniel Cormier at 190-200: it´d be hideous.
Andre Ward in with Michael Bisping: double hideous.

I don't know why some MMA fans pretend that Mercer-Sylvia and Holly holm becoming champ, never happened.

A boxer could have success in the octogon. He would have to train seriously for it, and be gradual, but it would be interesting to see (Jeremy 'half man-Half amazing' was showing how it should be done, but he retired, I don't know why).

The big thing is learning TD defense and defensive BJJ (kicking is not necessary if you have great hands, see cormier and Rampage for proof). Cro-cop did it in a few years, so I don't think it's mission impossible

But I agree that I don't want to see a boxer in a MMA fight if he goes there with barely any training a la Toney. At best he has a very slight chance of scoring a KO in the first few seconds, but if he doesn't, he gets taken down and submitted or GNP in a few minutes. Boring either way.

If there was a guy in MMA that could be beaten by a boxer it's surely Bisping. The guy is a piss poor boxer/kickboxer with a good TD defense, but barely no offensive grappling to speak of.

Anthony, like a true delusional Conor groupie with glasses and a tapout tshirt you basically see or hear what you want to see or hear.

Floyd didn't say he hits hard at all.

I saw the interview, he was asked about Conor's power and just sort of shrugged and said "Solid. Not hard enough to stop me coming forward. If he hit that hard, I wouldn't have come forward".

Who said anything about swinging wildly? They're your words not mine. No elite boxers "swing wildly", this isn't MMA where you get elite MMA fighters like Aldo running forward with their chin in the air, lolol.

Part of what makes elite boxers so fucking good is it takes an extreme level of craftiness and skill to be successful, and to be able to land on people who have been avoiding punches since they were kids.

I am surprised Floyd kept turning his back and then predictably putting his forearm and laces into Mc's face.

Paulie is that annoying kid at school with a big mouth that always gets his ass kicked in a fight.

I like him, he's a brave midget that fought a lot of larger harder midgets.

Khan,Cotto, Ndou, Hatton, that's some forcible midgetry right there.

I would have said Khan is not a midget and then I meet him at restaurant and he should be a jockey. Shows how small a lot of 140 are.

He's real small - and he does not drink alcohol - probably because of the annoying noise of glass encountering glass I guess.

Paulie's a good guy and he's very passionate and knowledgeable about boxing. He managed to overrachieve by a lot since he definitely wasn't blessed with elite boxing talent, and he always showed heart.

    I don't see why he's so hated.

In the VERY beginning of his career I hated him, but that all changed when Cotto broke his jaw and beat the fuck outta him, yet Paulie took the whupping like a G and stuck in there. Most guys would have quit in that fight, and not have been faulted.

Watching the fight again McGregor did even less than I initially thought. He landed some shots but mainly because Mayweather had zero respect for him the whole fight. Mayweather just walked him down with the high guard and picked off a lot of his shots with the gloves and elbows. He was also parrying nicely.

Another thing I noticed was that Mayweather seemed to want to put constant pressure on him. Every time the ref would separate them Mayweather would instantly advance towards him so that he wouldn't get a break which wore McGregor down even faster. The IQ difference was huge.

Not that McGregor was ever going to win but it seemed interesting that after the fight he said that he didn't know you couldn't throw punches at someone's back in boxing and that when he kept spinning Mayweather around and getting behind him he used a lot of his energy. Seems like keeping Paulie around in camp instead of trying to prove a point might have been the smarter play.

Yeah Floyd was putting tremendous pressure on Conor and that helped to wear him out. As you said, as the ref broke them Floyd rush straight up to Conor and applied the pressure

Agreed, but what happened to Anthony? When he was GF he was one of my fave posters and seemed a hardcore boxing fan like the rest of us. Since becoming "Anthony" he regressed into an MMA groupie, and now seems to have regressed even futher to a full on McNuthugger :D

I finally watched the fight. The best thing I can say for McGregor is that he has good footwork and balance. Probably better in that regard than most MMA fighters would be crossing over. But I definitely didn't see ANY power. Paulie correctly pointed that McGregor simply doesn't know how to throw a power punch in boxing with his weight properly transferred, which is exactly why I told that Anthony his MMA power wouldn't carry over a lick.

Any world class or semi-world class guy would have walked through his bullshit shots and mauled him.

McGregor would make a really limited guy like Liam Smith look like a killer.

Michael Bisping is the best example of a very hard worker with very limited talent who got as far as he got from sheer hard work. He's a f*cking sh*t fighter but he's got heart.

Anthony's taken over for Stinger in becoming Fightbeat's resident clown. And he actually believes everything he says which makes it that much funnier. LOL
