Who wins - Alvarez or Golovkin?

  1. Golovkin

    78.4%
  2. Alvarez

    21.6%
  1. Floyd has nothing to do with it. There are many Floyd victims that I have picked against.

I think GGG is a better fighter than Canelo...but I think the styles clash and the fact that GGG is on the decline ( I suspect) tells me that Canelo will last the distance in a competitive fight and as such he'll win a close decision

  2. Canelo has good defence , good ring generalship, great offense and enough chin to make it difficult for him to be stopped by anyone including GGG

  3. GGG is not only a one drink pony - he has a massive set. Movement and jab and technique. He chooses violence. Yes his lateral gets him caught, but he is extremely skilled.

I don't see Canelo jabbing him to Chinatown

Cause he's the bigger star with backing from the bigger promoter.

We all know DAMN WELL that a close, or even semi-close fight is gonna go to Canelo.

Sly overrates EVERY SINGLE ONE of Canelo's positive attributes.

Canelo has a solid jab... Sly makes it seem like he's Larry Holmes.

Canelo has a better than average defense.... Sly makes it seem like he's Niccolino Locche.

Canelo is a "good" counter puncher... Sly makes it seem like he's Salvador Sanchez.

Canelo has a solid chin.... Sly LITERALLY said it's as good as Jake Lamotta's.

Canelo doesn't have any unique attributes in the ring. He's gonna be easier for Golov to figure out than you expect.

  6. If I'm wrong, I'll gladly eat humble pie. I'm a GGG fan. I like both guys but I'm more of a GGG fan. I just think that stylewise Canelo has the advantage in this one. GGG of late looks to have slowed down a tad and is more hittable than before. Also I truly believe that Canelo has more than enough power to keep GGG honest, especially considering his varied and intelligent offense ( unlike Lemoo)

  7. By the way I've never mentioned Canelo' s jab, for the record, still Xplosive's post was poetic and I applaud him for it's artistry lol

Canelo does throw nice combinations, the thing is he has to be set to throw them, if Golovkin gets his jab firing as normal he will constantly have to reset and his punch output will be massively reduced.

    Exactly.

  10. Yup that's why I said earlier that if GGG neglects his jab ( or Canelo finds a way to negate it) I'd favour Canelo. Only the GGG jab can stop Canelo from winning.

  11. I'm sure Canelo is working on a way to nullify that jab and if he does...he wins.

There are three ways to nullify a jab that I know :

    1. Keeping pumping out your own jab consistently
    2. Pull counters
    3. Slip the jab and fire the left hook

if Canelo can successfully utilize one or more of these strategies then his faster more unpredictable combinations of power punches will win the day for him

I agree with Slice, and also agree with Xplosive there's nothing unique about Alvarez. He's just a good solid fighter, but there's nothing exceptional about him, even his power.

Kovalev watched them sparring and indicated that they were close but GGG got the better of it. However Canelo was around 18 at the time so GGG had a lot more experience at the time.

Canelo was actually 20 or 21, and Doug Fischer's account makes it seem like Gennady won clearly.

It's possible the time is perfect for GGG. Golovkin's reflexes and feet might not be whst they were, giving a prime Canelo the advantage in timing and footwork. It's obviously going to be one hell of a job keeping GGG off of him and staying busy for 3 minutes a round.

    Perfect for Canelo I mean.

  18. Fine...but GGG is now 7 years older and Canelo is 7 years wiser in boxing ( to paraphrase Joe Louis). Plus Canelo is a naturally larger man now than he was then.

Oh I agree, it's a different fight now. All I'm saying is let's not pretend Canelo was some little kid amateur boxer when they sparred, it was in 2011 and he was already at 154 pounds. People exaggerate and bullshit and say Canelo was a teenager etc.

It's an interesting read Sly, check it out Gym Notes classics: when Canelo and Gennady Golovkin sparred - The Ring

Jimmy obviously means well, he's a good guy, he's from Hounslow, but he's wrong as fuck here. GGG wins this comfortably.

By the way, is there anything that tastes better than proper chicken hot wings? It's a different level of tastiness.

Overhand right over the jab too.

Problem is, GGG sets counter traps - he jabs to get you to counter a certain way, then counters your counter. That's his thing, and he does it all while coming forward.

He'll work out Canelo's counters then counter them. Canelo either goes out on his sword, or goes into survival mode to lose a decision.

Punk is on 100% on the money.

It's crazy how Canelo is hyped as the only counterpuncher in this fight, when in reality, Golov is the BETTER counterpuncher. He's just an aggressive counterpuncher.

Yep. I fucking love Golovkin's aggressive counterpunching style. Constant pressure to make you uncomfortable and force you to do something, then counter you with brutal power shots.

I'm picking GGG in 10. I think he'll apply his usual methodical pressure, using his heavy jab and landing thudding shots to weaken Canelo and eventually stop him.

Canelo will have his moments, but GGG takes a good punch and eventually Canelo's shortcomings in movement, stamina will hurt him, as well as his modest power. Maybe Canelo will do an effective job of tying GGG up, because his slow feet and selective output can be very costly. Canelo is a good counterpuncher off the ropes, but that's dangerous to do against GGG.

I see the fights having similarities to Corrales-Freitas and Margarito-Cotto 1, in the sense that the one applying the pressure just breaks down the boxer, who has success but doesn't have the tools necessary to stop the incoming. And I don't think GGG will be down 5-1 after 6, like Chico and Plasterio arguably were before they turned the momentum.

  26. While I disagree with your outcome I think that the Corrales-Frietas and Margarito-Cotto 1 are very good analogies to the stylistic matchup.

  27. I think the main difference is that my reading of Canelo is that he has a lot of heart and can adjust to a guy applying pressure. He's also much tougher than both Frietas and Cotto.

But the guy has no credibility, and judges fight according to what he wants to happens. He scored the 1st PBF-Castillo fight for PBF (since he picked PBF), and the second a draw (since he picked Castillo). Pretty much never read anything he wrote after that
