People always talk about Tyson-Foreman being the best heavyweight matchup to make, but my God, this one might be close. I think you're either looking at a Liston early-to-mid KO, or a Frazier late KO. What you say?
That's the way I lean also... BUT.... the possibility of Liston stopping Joe inside of 6 is very real.
Liston quit against Ali because he couldn't find him. I think he'd be more inclined to fight on against a target he could hit. HAVING SAID THAT, Liston definitely didn't have Frazier's heart. That's for damn sure.
Yes people do quit against guys they can't find and yet fight hard against guys that may punch them back hard, but at least they can hit them. Happens a great deal. I think Liston would have to take out Frazier early to win this. I'm not sure he would. He's capable of doing it but I think Frazier will survive the early going. Once Joe starts to smoke I thin Liston will lose heart.
The Liston having no heart thing is a bit of a fallacy. The guy fought with a broken jaw, slugged it out with a prime Cleveland Williams, etc. Ali just got in his head. I think the fight goes pretty much like everyone says Liston early or Frazier late.
Yeah, I was re-watching Liston-Williams 1 last night, which inspired me to open this thread. Liston was lethal, and a much better technician than given credit for. There's an EXTREMELY real possibility of Liston blasting Frazier within 6. Thing is, late 60s Frazier is also better than given credit for. Historically, Frazier and Liston kind of live in the shadow of Foreman and Tyson.
