I have no hate for GGG. I'm a fan. Prime Roy beats everyone...Hagler, Hearns, Robinson, Monzon, Hopkins, Toney...everyone. There's no shame in losing to a prime Roy.

Being that Golov is on the downside and STILL beat Canelo on Saturday, I think it's safe to assume that the Golov of 4 years ago would have whupped him wide enough to leave no doubt on the judges cards.
Yeah but practically everyone that predicted that Saturday would be a close fight was based on the idea that we saw slippage in GGG. That was my premise from the start...so this is nothing new.
Four years ago he wasn't far removed from fighting middleweight killers like Kassim Ouma. Of course you'll look great against marginal to mid-level opponents. His last three fights were against his best three opponents...one of which was a blown up welterweight.

I agree with Musze. It's wayy too convenient to say that GGG has slipped, cause while its true he looked average recently, the last 2 guys he fought were by far the best he faced. We simply don't know if he was ever able to beat top level fighters impressively. It's GGG own fault that he thought he was too big of a star to face solid guys like De Gale and Jack and prefered to fight bums for all these years., and I won't reward him for that
I think there's an apparent difference in quickness/sharpness between the current Golov and the Golov of 4 years ago, and it has nada to do with opposition and everything to do with age. What's funny is... I said on here back in 2013 that Golov only had a few years to maximize his peak, and would slow down in 3-4 years. And as predicted, his peak was spent fighting average guys. However, it doesn't change the fact he's declining. So yes, I maintain, the Golov of 4 years would beaten Canelo more clearly. Most likely dominated him, considering even this faded version BORDERLINE dominated him.
Oh and btw, to answer the thread's question.... it doesn't matter what version of Golov shows up against prime Jones. Roy wins by a mile either way. I know Golov possesses a VERY solid chin, but still, he couldn't afford to eat Roy's power shots with abandon like he ate Canelo's.
My policy is to always trust my eyes. And my eyes tell me that regardless of opposition, Golov has lost a step from a few years ago. The guy has been middleweight champion of damn near 10 years.... it doesn't matter WHO you're fighting, eventually father time slowly diminishes your abilities.
there's ton of examples of fighters looking like killers against B level guys, and like shit against A level guys. There's nothing to suggest that it isn't GGG case. Not to mention that he looked shitty even in his prime against some B level guys (ouma, and Geale)

How am I make excuses when I said PRE-Saturday that he was declining? I said that he was declining, but that it wouldn't matter, he'd still beat Alvarez clearly. And I was RIGHT. The outcome is closer to what I predicted....which was a competitive fight that's guaranteed to go the distance. I thought canelo would edge it...but he didn't. You said GGG by domination (like LACY by Domination and stoppage)
so what. There's a million too many divisions in boxing. When all the good fights are a division above yours, and you prefer to fight shitty fighters in your weight class instead, I consider this a form of ducking. It's a terrible comparaison since Spence has many good/great fighters in his weight class. Hell, before last saturday, he already had a better resume than GGG
Neither one of those would be big fights. The idea of "ducking" fighters like that in the divsion above is preposterous. They are both average and unpopular fighters at world level, moving up as the middleweight champion for relatively meaningless fights like that would be utterly pointless, when you could instead defend your title, like a champion is supposed to.
it's absurd to think that a fighter who have only shitty fighters in his division should not move up. Especially considering that with the million weight classes in boxing, moving up doesnt means much. What was pointless was the barrel scrapping GGG indulged in. after almost 10 years as a champion, his best win was against Lemieux. BTW, if Degale and Jack are average, I wonder what Lemieux, the best guys GGG beat, is.
