I love this fight. Quartey at his TRUE best. This fight shows that Ike was a bit faded by time the DLH fight rolled around. Oscar always knew when to pick em.
Their first fight was more competitive. Hopkins destroyed Echols in the rematch. I'll never forget the Hopkins-Echols rematch ONLY because it was the night before Tito-Vargas.
Thing about quartey i've realized is he was really a sloppy fighter. His jab was excellent of course but otherwise his technique was really sloppy.
Yeah, he didn't exactly have the technique of Joe Louis. Quartey had overrated power, but underrated handspeed.
Great fight. Ike wore him down. Great jab, strong right hand, and very good hand speed, even though he was rather sloppy. This version of Ike was a problem.
Always loved Ike's jab, and that was a great finish of Espana. I still say Oscar lucked out against Quartey, Oscar did fuck all from rounds 7 through 11 (although Foreman thinks that's a lot for him). That's also why Oscar had more energy this time in the last round, because he spent so much of the fight posing and not punching. For Ike to be inactive for a year and a half and fight like that against an undefeated DLH was an example of his quality as a fighter.
A fighter doing fuck all besides posing and not punching for most of the fight, then rallying late, and getting a questionable decision. Hmmmm... sounds familar. Like father, like son.
It's been awhile since i saw the first fight, I remember Echols rocking Hopkins late. But it wouldn't take a lot to be more competitive than the rematch. It was a fun foulfest fun to watch, and also one-sided. Hopkins kicked Echols' ass. I don't think Echols even won a round. If that was Hopkins years later, he would have stayed on the floor for a DQ win.
or hopkins 2 years prior. has there ever been a guy involved in more of those type incidents than him?
