Apocalypse Now vs. Avatar

Just for shits, giggles and a nod to Xplosive....

 

Avatar is visually stunning but a shitty story. We get it. Humans destroy shit for money. I'm sorry but I was rooting for the military grunt to wipe out all of the blue fuckers.

 

Both based on the tale of Pocahontas and John Smith.

 

It's not even visually stunning anymore.

 

The only worthwhile way to ever see "Avatar" would have been on a 3D Imax screen. It was a fantastic novelty. Any other version is pretty much pointless and shitty.

Another lesser known example of this would have been the animated version they did of "Beowulf". I was blown away by it on Imax 3D. Couldn't believe how shitty it became once it transferred to the small screen.

 

Only a Complete Cunt would wish for such a thing.

The story of that film was much more than just humans destroying shit for money.

 

In a fictional world, you can cheer for the bad guy without it being a moral issue. The blue fuckers were pagans.

 

I worked at a movie theater at the time and I watched it on IMAX a lot.

Also saw Beowulf in IMAX years earlier in a brand new theater on the Las Vegas strip and it was great visually.

I saw Avatar twice. The first time, in regular 3D. Then dragged again by the wife to see it in 3D IMAX about a week later on a double date. Problem is, I was unimpressed from the FIRST viewing, so even seeing it IMAX wasn't appealing to me on the second viewing. Ideally, I would have liked to have only seen it once... in IMAX.

Beyond one viewing, it's just a highly mediocre movie with mediocre acting, and totally uninteresting characters and dialogue.

 

They were peaceful sweet blue angels minding their own business and the evil white man (ok...Earth man of all races) descended upon them killing them and stealing their shit. They were only defending themselves.

 

Knowing you...you were "unimpressed" before you even watched the film. As long as something receives too much hype, you hate it.

 

Quite the contrary. I was excited as fuck going into the first viewing, despite the fact that it wasn't on IMAX.

2009 was before designated seating, when all seats in theatres could be reserved online beforehand... so we had to get there early to buy quality seats, which we did.

Second viewing, IDGAF where we sat, I didn't wanna be there.

 

As for me I was the opposite. I had absolutely ZERO interest in watching this overhyped film with big blue fucking creatures. I was seeing the posters everywhere and wanted no part of it. One Saturday we had nothing to do and I took the wife and kids to see it...and was BLOWN AWAY by the film. Loved it. Yes it was cliché in many ways; the underdog good guys triumphed at the end and lived happily ever after and all that shit...but the execution of the story was great.

However, I am and I voted for the army to liquidate.

 

It's a bit embarrassing but I'm fairly sure my review of Avatar is on this site and I gave it an 8 out of 10.

Why embarrassing? Because I've never watched it again or even thought about doing so. To be watched in the cinema only for the experience. If I was rating it now it would be dropped to around the two to three out of five star mark.

Pretty much how everyone should feel about this movie.

Most effective use of the then-interesting 3D effects-style of movie-making.

Anyone who has seen or claims to have seen this movie more than once, that first curiosity viewing, and rates it as some marvel of movie-making....really needs to first have their head examining and then their head kicking-in.
